i think you have zeroed in on the key to "penetrating" these cholitas and the culture (pun intended). you have to learn the language. the secret to learning a foreign language is to enjoy it. generally, you can't learn a foreign language easily in a classroom as there just isn't enough exposure by only attending a class. better to hire a tutor or spend time with spanish-speaking friends. by far the easiest and fastest way to start learning a foreign language is pimsleur (www.pimsleur.com). michel thomas is also very good and concentrates on the verbs. you can find both with peer-to-peer network programs such emule and winmx. in winmx visit the learn a language chat group (or language central). tell them that dandaman sent you.

yes you will be a big hit with these cholitas if you are a gringo that speaks decent spanish. strangely, although spaniards know the language, they are not well liked in peru (sorry incaroca). many peruvians expressed their resentment of spaniards with me, but i'm not sure why because in mexico everyone seemed to brag about their spanish ancestry. anyway, this puts us non-native speakers of spanish in a very positive light. incredibly, most peruvians assume that all the foreigners they see are americans, when in reality only about 10% are. too bad for us americans, because when an obnoxious european offends a peruvian, they will assume they are americans. so remember when you are in peru, you are not only representing yourself but your country (and members of the wsgforum). appearance is very important to latins. they will think poorly of you if you are poorly dressed and groomed. one very important thing is to keep your shoes clean and shinned, something that is not very important in the us. so please be respectful of the people and culture and let them know that those obnoxious, unbathed, poorly-dressed foreigners are not americans.

Boy did they try to take you to the cleaners. Rates will be a little higher in the summer, but the summer soltice festival is over, so you should be okay. I recommend making reservations before hand and you can cancel or negociate a better rate once you get there. I only paid 9$ per night (breakfast included) so there are plenty of bargains. I'm not sure what class of hotel you are interested in, so let me know if you want the royal treatment or the economy route that I take.

A word of caution. You will probably spend your whole time in Cuzco with altitude sickness if you don't take some medicine first. Have your doctor prescribe some prophylactic treatment. Also, leave Cuzco as soon as possible and head for Machupicchu, which is lower in elevation. The best tour company is SAS. Tours are relatively cheap. A friend got me an all day tour of the sacred valley for $12, and an afternoon city-tour for $6. Also, flights can be very cheap and should not be over $150 round-trip. Check out www.taca.com. I got a round-trip ticket via the internet for $125 (tax included).

So, I would guess you shouldn't have to pay more than $300 for your trip to Cuzco (airfare included).

I was in Cusco on my way to MP (5 day hike - what a TRIP) so I figure I'd put in my 2 cents on the hobby. I was only in Cusco for a day before and a day after my MP excursion but here goes.

All this talk of cholitas is pretty interesting to me. I WISHED I had KNOWN! lol, but...

As you all may know there are several discos in Cusco and they ALL look to have as many people pack them every night. There are girls hired to stand outside in the street and pass out free drink cards and dance cards to get you to choose THEIR disco. Some of these girls are hot as hell.

On our night AFTER our hike, we were all high on life and could do no wrong. So I met this 18 yr old (or so she said) local girl passing out drink cards. Ok Razor! You have reason, most of the cholitas of Cuzco and other places arent 100x100 pure race. I think you're wrong when you said you're having an indigeneus women in Cusco, they're actually MESTIZAS (Blend between indigenous-spanish ancestors) the real "indiecitas" are hard to get, they live mostly up on the
mountains. I'll suggested to go to Chincheros, Pisac or other small villages and maybe you'll know (sexually) these girls, but I doubt it. Las cholitas can be find in any South American country from Mexico to Argentina.

How are you my fellow cholita-chaser? I am planning a trip to Peru this spring and wanted to find out if you might by chance be there at the same time. It sounds like you have traveled quite a bit in the Sierra and might have some travel tips.

I will be in Peru at the end of May and begining of June, and I will spend most of my time in and near Cuzco. I'd like to visit Iquitos too, but it's just too expensive and time consuming to fly there for a few nights of fun. I love Charapitas, but due to time limitations, I plan on spending most of my time around Cuzco chasing Cholitas. Please let me know if you or anyone else will be in Cuzco at that time. We could meet up and do some exploring together.

I've been thinking about visiting the jungle town of Puerto Maldonaldo to satisfy my lust for Charapitas. It has direct flights from Cuzco ($50) and to Lima ($70). This will only add 50 bucks to my transportation costs on my way back to Lima to catch my flight to the US. Last trip it added $160 to my transportation costs to go to Iquitos from Cuzco and I wasted almost an entire day on delays and layovers in Lima and Pucallpa. If you fly domestically in Peru, avoid the airline TANS. TANS really sucks.

If you or anyone else have any info on Puerto Maldonaldo, please post it.

Here's that message, I hope it provides some useful info for future visitors to Cuzco --

In my humble opinion, Cuzco rules!

Johan, the airfare from Lima to Cuzco is only $70 via Aerocontinente. So thats $140 roundtrip, not $300. In addition, the hotels can be as cheap as Lima, and I only paid $9 (not $25) for a nice room with private bath and breakfast included. I had an american friend who was paying only $7. Also the hotel was close to the Plaza and had a nice little electric heater as it's cold at night in Cuzco. You are right about the altitude sickness. I didn't feel right for about 3 days (headaches and fatigue). They say you should drink lots of coca tea to recover quicker. Johan, I don't know how you would manage to spend $550 in 4 days! Even the tours were economical. An all-day Sacred Valley tour for $12 and an afternoon City Tour for $6 (I took the spanish-speaking tours with GatuTours which is the best company). I made the 4 day hike (Camino Inka) to Machupicchu which included everything (transportation, food, camping equipment, tour guide, porters, etc.) for only $150 (this included the $50 hiker's entrance fee to Machupicchu and $30 Backpacker Train fare). Food was cheap too. The "menu" (meal of the day) is only 4 soles (about $1) at many restaurants in Cuzco. The more economical restaurants are near the market where you can pay 2.50 soles for an entire meal, drink included. With respect to transportation, Cuzco is cheaper than Lima in that the basic taxi fare is only 2 soles. Most fares in Lima will be in the 5 - 15 soles. All in all, Cuzco can be as cheap or cheaper than Lima. Write me at [Email address deleted by Admin] and I can give you more specifics on hotels, restaurants, tours, etc.

Johan, with respect to the girl scene in Cuzco. I really had my hands full. I couldn't begin to handle all the wonderful cholitas I met. I bet they would even like a "big dutchman" like yourself as long as you speak a little spanish.

With repect to speaking spanish, this is the real key. Being a non-native speaker of castellano, I have been working on my spanish language skills for many years. Recently, I came across some excellent spanish language resources on the web (Kazaa, newgroups, etc) that really helped. One is called Pimsleur. They are 4 courses (Spanish I, II, III, and Spanish Plus). There are no books, just audio. In no time you will be speaking spanish like a pro! Also, check out the spanish course by Michel Thomas. It is similar to Pimsleur in that they are no books but concentrates more on grammer and verbs. Both are excellent and will really help develop the language skills you need for girlfriend action.

I'm glad there's someone else that appreciates the indigenous women of South America. Nibu keeps on telling me how the cholitas are ugly and have small tits. If I wanted a white girl, I wouldn't be in South America. The girls in the Sierra are very exotic and beautiful to me. But perhaps more important is the way they treat me. Also, you might want to spend the night in Aguas Calientes near Machupicchu. It's inexpensive and there are no cars there, very quiet. The cholitas love the discos, so check out Mama Africa's on the Plaza de Armas. Let me know what price range you are interested in. Cuzco can be as cheap as Lima if you know where to go. With respect to bringing back girls to your hotel, there should be no problem or extra charges. They might ask for her ID if she is an obvious hooker. I really didn't see any hooker action on the Plaza de Armas, just alot of street vendors. Enjoy Cuzco. It's my favorite place in the world. I'm making plans on moving there in the Spring.

I´m in Iquitos now, but I want to give you the story of Cuzco. Cuzco is full of sluts from Lima that come here to rip-off gringos. My advise is to stay away from these over-priced sluts and find yourself a nice Cholita. It took me exactly two days to find myself a Cholita. She´s wonderful -- my Inka Princess.
