Yeah I was in one place like that in North Peru and in Ecuador. However I prefer to get some escorts, but I agree with you, that there is no reason to pay 250-500 Soles. It's a bit of a hike but I used to make a trip out of it and spend a couple of days in Chosica. Nice chill place. Visit on the way up then on the way back.
