These cities' costs of living are pretty comparable but Montevideo is maybe 10-15% higher overall. Why? My opinion is that it has to do with a greater degree of socialism, and thus higher taxes, in Uruguay. I believe Uruguay has a flat VAT of 21% on everything whereas Argentina has three tiers: 10.5% on basic necessities, 16% on some other stuff, and 21% on luxury/discretionary goods. Uruguay has a long and noble history of taking care of its poor, whereas Argentina has gone back and forth from socialism to capitalism. Uruguay has the highest literacy rate and longest life expectancy of any Latin American country.

Argentina has a more diversified economy. Pricing tends to be more transparent in Uruguay, less hidden bullshit. There is a law (don't know if it applies to the whole country or just MDE) that all restaurants must post menus with prices prominently in the window.

Chica pricing, IME, depends on your experience, language skills, and willingness to negotiate. BA has way, way more hookers and the scene is way more obvious, so that would argue that prices should be lower. However, they don't seem to be.

Rents, especially short-term, are somewhat lower in MDE now. BA is experiencing both a real estate boom and a tourism boom. BA has a superior public transportation system, but driving yourself is more feasible in MDE (less traffic, but watch out for the horses; you cannot legally ride a horse in BA city but they are still common in MDE).

MDE is much quieter and sort of boring, really. Maybe a better place to raise a family but BA is far better for mongering. The women are better looking in BA. Lots of fatties in MDE. Fruits and vegetables are better and cheaper in MDE. The restaurant food has less variety in MDE, really quite unimpressive IMO.

MDE gets the edge for climate as rainfall is more evenly distributed and the temperature cools off at night more so than in BA, during the hottest months. Daytime highs are similar but MDE is (slightly) less humid.

Uruguay as a country is more interesting than MDE as a city. I think half the population of Uruguay lives in MDE and the rest is pretty empty. BA is a major international city and MDE is full of hicks.

If your in Punta, @ the Conrad would suggest...

if you don't meet some gals @ the Conrad maybe you drive and head South a bit to Maldonado to La Casa de Nana in the city of Maldonado approx 15 minute drive from Conrad

located Simon del Pino y Av Aigua , opens approx 8 - 9 pm, gals who work there tells me closes 4 - 5 am, and on street behind also another place think that street is Soriano but wouldn't swear toit, I found the chicas @ Nana's better though one who wasn't @ 10 in appearance maybe a 5 did get me off nicely.

A bit tricky to find for me the first time I went while it was raining, keep your eyes open in this particular neighborhood, have been a couple times and no one messed with me/us but if someone overly buzzed and not paying attention , careless potentially might have problem, its not like being on Golero in PDE with a buzz , put it that way.

I know someone in Punta who has past ties to the Conrad and will be seeing him Aug 25thish when I come back and can ask him.

If your going to be there b4 Sept 10, PM me and we can meet up @ Conrad or elsewhere.

    Take care,

    Art

    Nibu,others,

I've done some research on Uruguay and it is NOT what I'd expected to be.
If youw ant cheap xxx, great varity of girls do NOT go to Uru.
    !!!!!!!!!
Many "richer"Argentines and Urug. go there. So that is BAD for prices:-(

Prices are higher then in Brasil. Besides that...flying form Europe it means 15-18 hours in a plane:-(

If going NOT to Brasil I am still doubting between Ecuador and Argentina (BA Area).
Besides that Salvador,Recife and even Porto Seguro (all in Brasil)seem better places to be then in Punta del este..!!

    Just my 2 cents.
