Generally, the same clubs are still around. Prices seem to be around 1000 pesos ($ 38 US) for an hour, and it may well stretch longer without problems. As usual it is best to refuse to negotiate in dollars. Say you have none.

Prices are generally similar to BA. I find this scene more relaxing, however. Montevideo is a bit laid back in general. The girls seem friendly, and it is easy to dance or play pool with them in some of the clubs. They may not be quite as stunning, but there are some great looking women here. And they seem truly friendly.

Pikaros probably has the best talent, but I did not give the B. Aires club a real chance.

Everyone seems to have a show right at 1 a.m., and they probably all start at 1:15 or 1:30 a.m.

A few more options to consider... A similar club, the New Whiskeria, is on Andes, a block or so west of Pikaros and the rest of them, about a block South of the main street (18 Julio). They advertise lesbian shows, but a dancer told me that that starts at 2:30 a.m. I did not hang around. Friendly chicas. I danced for awhile with a chica to some rock music, with a Afro-Carribean live drummer (a local music favorite).

Brujas (address: Uruguay 1003, at J. Herrara y Obes) is a local cheapie within easy walking distance. No entry fee, 40 Peso high quality drinks, 50 peso chica drinks, music, dancing and pool tables. Pretty good all in all. Nice girls, but generally in the 4 to 7 looks range. I was quoted 280 Pesos for a half hour with a girl I had been dancing with, hotel included. Apparently the hotel is next door. That is ten dollars. It seemed so cheap and I liked the girl, so I asked for an all night price. She went and asked the manager, which seemed nuts. I was told $ 220 US! Ouch. I guess the locals do not do all nighters and the management decided to see what they could get. I moved on for a bit and asked around and learned that you pay in advance at this club and the girls only get half of it. Runs like a departamento. Pikaros makes its money on drinks and I think the girl keeps what she can get from you.

The girl I was with at Brujas was embarrassed at the $ 220 US quote, said it was crazy, and wanted to go back to the manager and get a lower price. I know, I know -- sounds like buying a car with the salesman claiming to work for you and negotiate for you against mean boss. But I believed her and still do. I told her I was not entirely pleased with the club, tipped her very well and left alone. She was really nice about it, and gave me her phone number. I may call but did not promise to do so.

There are transitorios around. Taxis know them. They charge per hour - maybe 200 pesos - and I think overtime is by half hour so that 80 minutes is 1.5 hours....

On balance, I found the scene to be a bit lower key than BA and really quite ok.

Hi JW Can you make an update on Montevideo? I mean A bargain update like on the streetwalkers and massage parlors. Someone made a post awhile back that all the massage places were shuttured in Montevideo and also way back in Ascunsion,Paraguay. Well like stated in Another post I should be in Uruguay the 3rd week of august this thursday I leave from Lima To Arica Chile. I hope JW Or even Some of the Argentenian posters can help me out on the little sister wannabe country of Argentina that is Uruguay. What about info too on the local whiskerias. Where else can you find ads for massage parlors too? In the yellow pages what listings do you need to look under for sexual pleasures? Any other street hooker zones? (This report is about 8 months old, and should still be useful for the basics. Given the scene as I remember it now, though, I can totally see (and agree with) the post below.)

O.k., here's the general Montevideo low-down. There are basically 4 clubs in town: "Pikaros," "Baires Disco," "Bico," and Moustache." The first three are all within a block of each other at the corner of Convencion and Soranio.

"Baires" is supposedly the best. The three nights I was there, there were about 20-30 women. Most were unexceptional. Prices quoted were about 100USD of and hour or so; you can take them out or have sex with them there (rooms weren't that good).

You have to buy the girl a drink first (15-20USD), and if you have sex there, it's 30USD for the room. If you take her out (which I never did), I think there's a 30 USD exit fee. Everyone was tip-hungry.

"Pikaros," around the corner, is much better. Drinks are cheaper, women are better looking, and there's no exit fee (but no rooms for sex). You have to take them out. Prices quoted were about 50USD/hour. About 15-20 girls on any given night, many pretty good looking and young. Very low-pressure atmosphere.

"Bico" is across the street from here. Very low-scale, but clean and safe. About 15 women, all older and fatter than the other places. Worth a look, though, as things like this always change.

Never went to "Moustache," but expect something in between Pikaros and Baires.

All the clubs are open 'til close to dawn. A few are open Sundays, too (can't remember which ones -- Baires and Bico, I think).

Another option, and this runs 'til about 2am, are the massage parlours in town. They're all run in big, clean, unmarked apartments right off the main strip. The only way to find them is to accept the flyers touts hand out on the far end of the strip away from sea. The flyers have maps and addresses.

They're outrageously cheap. I spent 17USD (yes) of half-an-hour, and she was pretty cute, too. Most parlours have about 10 girls working there. The occasional seven is about the best you can hope for -- but for 35 dollars an hour, whaddya want?

I've also heard that there're some cabarets down by the old town. Never could find them. Maybe a local could fill this out.

WARNING: If you are sitting around your house in America or Europe and thinking about visiting Montevideo to find program girls.

GO ELSE WHERE.

There are at least 4 hobby bars in Montevideo. (I was there for several days a few months ago--very disappointing scene).

The bars have girls that you would never see in Buenos Aires. All 4s, 5s--the occasional 6. (Nothing higher)

The currency in Uruguay is stronger than BA and as result--the bar girls all want $100 for a few hours.

It's a dismal scene compared to Argentina.

If you have to be in Montevideo---rest assured, it is a very safe tranquil city of sleep walkers.

All the bars are in a 3 block radius--on block away from their main Avenida de Julio something or other. ALL THE CAB DRIVERS can take you there. DO NOT FEAR hailing a cab in the street. These poor drivers are more holy than priests.

To conclude:

Montevideo has below average looking hobby girls who charge way too much. (Hotels are very run down looking and are much more expensive than Buenos Aires).

However, the streets are safe (no crime to speak of) and you will find the regular gentry of Montevideo to be extremely placid, congenial human beings. Honest to a fault.

PS. The regular girls walking around the streets of Montevideo are not very glamorous. You won't get whiplash like you do in some towns around the world (Florence Italy has some amazing pedestrian specimens!)
