Have you been to playa palenque (45 minutes from san cristobal) and is it worth visiting? I saw mundy car wash bar, blue bar and some liquor store bars in San Cristobal (I heard blue palace is a nice place) , any other bars or pay for play places you can recommend in san cristobal? Gracias.

I go there all the time, very nice beach but not for mongering. Everyone is there with someone or its full of families.

However if you want to bring a girl it's a nice beach almost no vendors to speak of, there is a restaurant / bar called merry coco or something like that, they have the greatest seafood empanadas. At the end of the street that runs along the beach are a couple of big bars / restaurants that blast music the biggest is called dominican york.

Overall never really crowded, there is one decent hotel nearby (Hotel Paleque) overpriced for the area, they have real good food but again overpriced.

Ask some more questions if you need more info.

I exclusively eat at la sirena usually they have a cafeteria and you can get a decent meal for a 150 to 200 pesos.

When I cook I also buy all the ingridents at la sirena and so far I have not had any problems. I aviod food which is sold in the streets.

I have a friend (working chica) who is a real smart business lady. She's been renting a room at the all inclusives acting like she is on vacation with her sister and does her business there. I've been there about 30 times in about 2 1/2 years and have never seen these signs. I've been down there for 3 weeks at a clip but never more than 1 month at any given time. Thanks for the info. 800 pesos is no biggie.

I just sold my house and will not be moving into the new one until May and figure I'll go stay down there for the duration until the new place is availalble.

The one I like is next to the metro stop Mama Tingo. If you go before 9PM the lady is more generous with the cut than the guy that works later in the night. I also think they get a kick out of serving gringos.

She was giving me samples of stuff, one thing was something called buffo or something, I have no idea what it was but it looked like deep fried steak (not chicken fried like here in the states). But I'm sure its some part of the pig I don't want to know about.

The sausage was really good, very intense spice (not hot) but rich in flavor.

You do not get a visa when you enter, you get a tourist card, a better way you can view that is a visa exemption. A visa is applied for before and in some countries they issue a visa on arrival. DR is not one of them. If you overstay there is a penalty with clear signs at the airport as to how much. For a few days it is peanuts. For a few years it can cost you.

The fact they post a fine for over 30 days and as much as 5 years shows you it is just a tax and not a big deal. Unlike Thailand where if you are caught in country over 30 days on an exemption you go to jail until they deport you.

These are the rates in Spanish. Note the over 5 years used to be about $50 US. Now it is a lot more, though not a fortune. You can extend a tourist card (once, I think) at the immigration in Santo Domingo but I suspect the cost and hassle is more than the exit fees for just about any time period , the only reason is if you get hassled by the cops a lot and they calculate the overstay and want to make an issue of it.

Can't speak for the other places but I stayed at affordable-adult-vacations a couple to times and did not feel like I over paid considering everything was paid as part of the $350-$400 / day fee. Having never left the US before it was nice to have the a person taking care of everything from pickup to drop off. Depending how much you eat, drink and partake in the ladies, BB is not a lot cheaper with everything considered. For the first time visitor to the DR I think the cheaper places like Total Satisfaction and Affordable are a viable option. I assume if I could afford $1200 or more a night discretion would be more of a concern than price.

I realize I might take a little heat on this board for supporting the AI places like Affordable but everyone has different needs and comfort levels and like me the nice little place in Boca Chica was the perfect place to begin my adventures in the DR. Two years later I speak a little Spanish and feel comfortable traveling by myself in the DR but still stop in to visit with Carlos when in Boca Chica.

I don't want to come off as negative towards Geolopes because now I would not think of staying at Affordable but at one time that was the perfect option for me as it could be for other individuals who visit this board.

Sometimes I get a sensitive stomach. I was out and about the other day and had the craving for some chicharon from Villa Mella (supposedly the best). This stuff is pretty good but you can only usually get it off the street carts. I was with a girl that went out and bought it for me and it was great and no stomach problems. The next time I wanted some I was out with another girl and I was a bit drunk, I went to the same place but this time I went out to buy, the cart not only had the chicharon, but had about any part of the pig on display including snouts, ears and other parts I couldn't make out. Being drunk, I made what probably was a bad decision and I bought one of their cart made sausages, it was deep fried and looked fairly good with my rose colored glasses.

It was great, my dominican companion refused to even try it, she said I was going to get sick. The next morning, no problems whatsoever. I was shocked. I've gotten sick from much milder things over there from some supposedly good / clean restaurants.

However, I will not be repeating the sausage incident as there is no way to judge what is going into it.

Chicharon de Villa Mella is quite good, if you can get the courage of eating from one of the street vendors I would recommend trying.

I was on the Greater Santo Domingo mongers map and noticed that one of the main pages referring the map is not the ISG. It is a link about clubs and adult resorts in the DR, even nudist clubs. I never imagined there were so many adult resorts in the DR, in Puerto Plata, Juan Dolio, Boca Chica etc, most of them too expensive. Here is the link:

Now, I obviously haven't stayed at most of the high end AI clip joints mentioned in that link. Most of these so-called AI places operate out of rented places, promise the world for crazy cash, don't live up, import foreign women (illegal) , or hire fairly regular looking, not medically vetted beach girls nearby, etc. One of the places mentioned is closed and the previous owner is in a Brazilian jail for sex trafficking according to one of my well informed sources. There are only 2 places in the AI catagory that live up to their billing. 1) BB's on the very affordbale end. 2) O2 is the highest one should go. Actually, BB's is not AI but its very affordable. Paying anywhere from $400 to $2, 500 a night at these other joints is just STUPID and exploitive.
