My college finance professor would be disappointed in me if I didn't understand that there is a substantive difference between the bid and ask prices offered on the FX for a currency versus the anecdotal evidence of what exchange rate is actually being offered on the "street".

The FX is, of course, primarily influenced by market forces (supply v. demand) where as the street exchange price can be influenced more by emotions and other extraneous factors (good or bad).

This is why I will continue to maintain, that if you are getting the 28.50 to 1 exchange price from reliable sources, on the street, then I'll believe you, but at this price I will say again "the RDP may well be MORE overpriced at this level than it ever has been in history!"

I, por ejemplo, wouldn't want to buy pesos at these prices!

I think you and I are arguing different sides of the same coin - I agree, a collapse from these levels seems very possible.

Gentlemen,

Just a few notes that may be of interest to some of you:

The D.R. need$ help right now due to the devastating 2004 hurricane season. Don't be shy about $ending and $pending $ome much needed U$ dollar$.

Check out a very nice TV show called "Santo Domingo Invita". It is very informative about everything Dominican and it is fun to watch. You can catch it in NYC on channel 47 Telemundo on Sunday mornings 10AM.

And... check out !Caliente! on Univision (channel 41 in NYC) Saturdays at 2PM. The dancers are indeed very caliente (hot!) in this little weekly musical. If you are home alone have your favorite motion lotion ready. You might just need it >;-)

Exchange rates...

When talking about FX, you have to consider what you get on the street and what you get in the market.

The peso is about 31.50 to 1 USD on the street (local banks in DR, change houses, etc.) and in the FX market, it is around 28 to 1.

It's simple...the local DR places are taking advantage of the low official market rate by offering better prices for the dollar to attract more.

I'm concerned too about the rise. I'll be there is SD on 10/21 and my source for today is 28.50.

Hi Mister,

Is your 28.50 to 1 figure what you're experiencing first-hand? In other words, are you "in country" and are being offered that rate at exchange houses today?

The reason I ask is that I use two separate (web based) currency converter services that have been "dead-on" in the past, and I'm getting figures of 33.50 RDP to 1 USD and 33.25RDP to 1 USD today (9/30/2004)

28.50 to 1 sounds low to me.

Beware of the exchange rate.

The peso is climbing so take that into consideration when paying for a chica, rule of thumb never pay more than 100US for TLN and no more that 50US for 1 hour in house with 2 nuts.

That is with tip included.

It was most recently in the 34-35 range.

Keep in mind that even though prices have doubled since the peso hit a 54 range high earlier this year and now it is back down to where it was over a year ago, history should repeat itself.

We should see a climb by year end.

The problem is that once a photo is posted,even tho this is a "private club" , we cannot police the usage by others. Of course, not posting would eliminate that problem..but it is a valuable resource for those who use it in the spirit it was intended.

we had the pleasure of being at blackbeards for hurricane jeanne. it was a real experience. the place really did tie everything down and the town shut down. we found a great bar/club thanks ot ian the guide that is posted here. he saved our asses. we were able to find two great ladies to hold off the storm with.

it was amazing he lives near blackbeards and worked there for a period of time. i do believe that he knows evey single girl in puerto plata!!

it was raining like hell and blowing like in a desert storm and as we arrived back to blackbeards it was 1:30 a.m. the damn guard tried, and i mean tried, to not allow one of the girls we had in cause she didn't have her i.d. card.

i had to explain to him that there was no chance in hell that i was not getting into my room without her. my buddy finally told him to fuck-off and call the police. he then said that it was ok.

guess before you bring a girl back to your room during a hurricane you had better check her credentials!!

we had ian work for us as a guide/taxi for our entire stay in puerto plata/sosua. he can be reached at 809-963-7605.

we stayed at the palace two nights, went to blackbeards for two nights and then returned to the palace for three nights. i will post my experience's in the right city threads.

we are back in santo domingo at the marriott courtyards with high speed internet in each room and it is great.

we leave tomorrow for two weeks in brazil, starting in rio. life is tuff!!
