I've been living in Bulgaria for almost 10 years now (mostly in Sofia and Varna) and it's not as bad as some posts suggest.

Prostitution is not illegal here as someone claimed in the Varna thread. Pretty much all activities related to it (pimping, brothels, etc) however are. With that said, it's tolerated and unless they are causing trouble in public, working girls (and their clients) are largely left alone by the authorities. Only trafficking rings (especially ones involving minors) are prosecuted and even that is questionable as corruption is fairly wide-spread and the local "mob" has a lot of police protection.

As grim as the above sounds, it doesn't actually affect the average local or tourist all that much. The streets are relatively safe (or at least no more dangerous than anywhere else in the EU), unless you are being stupid. In other words, use your common sense and you'll be just fine.

SWs can be found on many corners and every 100 ft or so on major boulevards after 10-11 pm. Those however are the worst choice you could possibly make as 99% of them are worn out gypsies, who provide extremely poor service (if you can even call it that) and many will try to rip you off, especially once they realize you are a foreigner. Not to mention the wide variety of "gifts" a simple BBBJ from them can provide. The upside is obviously the price as you can get serviced for as little as 20-30 BGN.

As mentioned a few posts above, the solution is going online. http://en.topescort.bg (the English mirror of http://alo.bg) is your best choice. Comparatively speaking, the amount of fake profiles is actually not very high and you can usually spot them fairly easily (again, use common sense. If the pictures look like they should be in a fashion magazine, that's probably where they came from). 40-50% of the girls on the site are pros with their own apartment (or one that they share with one or more "friends" who are also available), while the rest are part-timers who only do outcalls during the day. Obviously both options have merit, depending on what you are looking for. The average price is 100 BGN (50 EUR) for an hour of standard service. They will usually charge you another 20 BGN for BBBJ, kissing, DATY, etc and up to 50-100 extra for A-Level. Standard "taxi" charge for outcalls is 20 BGN. English is widely taught in local schools, so it shouldn't be a problem, especially with girls in their 20's or 30's (and really, how much vocabulary could they possibly need). Keep in mind that most girls won't reply to SMS (not even from a local number) or answer if your number is hidden. The best approach is to get a local SIM and just call. There are plenty of gems on the site and at those prices, you can even afford a few misses to get there. A fair warning though, especially for those used to Asian service, don't expect GFE in any shape or form. You might get lucky, but that's relatively rare unless you become a regular (in which case all bets are off. The girl I'm living with currently used to be a part-timer on the site).

Hotel bars / lounges. I haven't stayed at a hotel here in many years, so my information on the subject is rather old, but you should be able to spot at least a few WGs in or around the bigger hotels. No idea about the quality or prices (but obviously stay away from the gypsies). Your best bet is probably to tip the receptionist and mention that you might be looking for some company. If they are experienced enough on the job (some are, some aren't), their next question should be what hair color, height, weight, etc you prefer and take care of it from there. Keep in mind though that if you find your own company for the night (or even for a few hours), many hotels will charge a "guest" fee of up to 50 BGN to allow her to come to your room. Many hotels will keep her ID (or make a copy) and only return it after they've ensured that there were no problems.

Strip clubs here are mostly just that. You can watch a great show (talent is usually 8's, 9's and even 10's in most clubs) and get a fantastic lap dance, but the chances of full service are slim to none. Your best bet is to pay for a private (aka VIP) dance in a private room and try to negotiate with the girl directly. Now, I'm in my 30's and consider myself fairly decent-looking, but so far I haven't been able to get anything even after offering up to 250 EUR for a few hours at my place. Maybe someone with more game / looks could actually do it, but it'd still be very, very pricey.

Non-pros and night clubs. Now this is a bit tricky, especially if you don't speak the language. There are plenty of clubs and night life is booming in both Sofia (during Winter) and Varna (during Summer). There's plenty of talent to go around and local girls are fairly open-minded, especially around foreigners. Or rather around foreigners with cash and some game. And that's the tricky part, because it's a balancing act. Showing some cash without becoming a target. Splashing cash around in a local club will surely attract attention, but if you overdo it, there's a decent chance you'll get into some trouble. My advice is to be discreet and not make a show of yourself. Also keep in mind that "showing some cash" has a different meaning here as the average local probably doesn't make more than 300-400 EUR a month.

Tourist destinations like Golden Sands, Riviera, Albena (near Varna) and Sunny Beach (near Bourgas) are exceptions to the above as foreigners acting stupid is pretty much the norm there. It's also a lot easier to score (or get scammed). The tourist season is between April / May and September / October and all of these places are booming with life, but everything closes by the end of October. If your visit falls outside of Summer, stick to the bigger cities (Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Bourgas).

And that's pretty much it. Bulgaria is definitely not the best mongering destination due to the relatively low quantity, but it makes up for it in quality. I've been to most EU countries and while there are far richer hunting grounds elsewhere, eastern European girls will always be my favorite.
