I am off ot Prague soon for a weekend.

Just wondering where to stay in Praha 2 area, I wish to visit K5 as for a first timer it seems that this is the easy solution, although a little expensive.

Does anyone know any good hotels in Praha 2 or Praha 1 that won't break the bank or a cheap hotel website for Prague, I use www.octopus4easyjet.com which only has a couple of good priced hotels.

Also I wish to try one of the private's but concerned as to what they look like, or getting ripped off, does anyone know a fail safe Private?

Foreigners are an easy prey indeed but the Pragers are not off limits. They most likely have some 3 month or yearly ticket and the inspectors are well aware.

The three intersection metrostations are notorious for random ticket controls. ALWAYS punch your ticket when going through one of them. Tramline 22 is another hotspot, especially on the segment starting from Namesti Miru to Pohorzelec on top of the Prague Castle. Another killing field is bus 119 from the airport to Dejvicka metro station. Damn how many travellers I have seen being busted for producing an unstamped ticket and they are sitting ducks really with all their marked luggage.

You make a good post about "validating" your ticket. No one tells you to do this. You buy your ticket and most people would probably assume it's fine. I did. I didn't know I had to insert it in the machine that stamps the date until Swed Dude told me to.

On the other side of the coin, the entire week I was in Prague I didn't see one cop or officers checking anyone's ticket. Buy the cheapo 250 Kr. ticket if you're there a few days. It's good for the week. You can also buy one for 1, 2, 3 days.

Something unique about Prague is just how far down these metros are. The escalators that go up/down extend a very long way. I haven't taken a metro so far underground before. Very easy to get around.

With your permission Jackson, I would like to post the following at least in the Poland, Czech Republic, and Hungary sections.

For those of you budget travelers like me who rely on public transportation to get by in a new city, here are some words of (serious) advice: punch/insert your ticket as soon as you walk on.

There could be serious penalty if you¡¯re caught with no valid ticket. It does not matter if you have ticket or not but was it registered or not. Most time the penalty is in cash and right there. (They may accept Credit Card by now!). The controllers pick on tourists only. So, don¡¯t be fooled if you don¡¯t see anybody else around you punching like you did. I always wondered why such double standards.

I cannot emphasis enough on how important it is to have heads up on this punching/inserting your ticket. Although, I have never experienced it myself but I have seen others who were approached and I saw how they were treated, didn¡¯t like it. Keep in mind that the language barrier will make things worse. You have to pay up. That¡¯s why I believe even one victim is too many.

Usually, tickets can be used for different modes: bus, tram, and metro (in Prague and Budapest). The tickets are very reasonable so stack up. Each ticket is good for one time, one segment only. In Prague and Budapest, you could use the same ticket on certain routes but it could easily become a headache to keep up with it. Better not to deal with it. Like I said, tickets are very reasonable.

No matter what time of day, how empty, or how crowded, the first thing you need to do is to punch in or insert your ticket. If it is over crowded and you even barely get in, the first thing to do is to find your way to the nearest box and register.

The best thing to do is to have a single ticket ready in your hand, register it, and hold it in your hand (or know where it is) and dispose of it as soon as you get off. The worst thing is to be stopped and pull out a bunch of voided tickets trying to figure out which one is for current use.

In all Eastern Bloc capital city airports: Warsaw, Prague, Budapest, Bucharest, and Sophia, you could take a bus to downtown (or near) for less than one or two dollars. In Prague and Budapest you could even, get more frequent bus services to the first segment of the underground metro. For every piece of luggage, you are carrying with you, punch/insert a ticket. Don¡¯t worry about how big or small: one ticket per piece of luggage per segment! If you¡¯re being accompanied with any local ¡®beauty¡¯, you use one ticket for her as well. Tickets are reasonable. Buy few tickets at a time. I always keep at least two tickets where I could not easily reach for emergency. Meaning late at night when you cannot find an open kiosk to buy ticket. In Warsaw, Sophia, and Bucharest, the services shut down around 10 or 10:30 pm. don¡¯t get caught off guard.

I know a lot of us have already figured these out but if there is only one hobbyist who could benefit from this information, I thought it would be worth the time to write it. Lets review it again together: have bunch of (new) tickets at all time, punch/insert as you walk on, hold it (the ticket), and dispose of it as soon as walk off, okay. Happy hunting.

You will probably take the highway to Ostrava through Brno and Olomouts, before Ostrava, fastest way.Better than going through the villages, it's more km. but faster. Once in Ostrava or Olomouts pick up a magazine called avizo, I think, it's in every newstand. It lists every privat and bordell in north moravia. Problem is that it's in Czech and the women speak czech and probably some german. Ostrava probably has as many privats as prague. If you know german you are better off. Your correct about K5, overpriced for the same thing you can get everywhere. Once past Olomouts, on the way to Ostrava you will be going through villages, the highway sort of ends.
