nordrhein-westfallen, the state (land in german) which includes köln, dusseldorf and all the rest.

hotel passes - who knows. most cities offer a day pass for 6 or so euros and that works fine. some of these other things throw in museum discounts.

plane v train. depends. plane can actually be cheaper if booked in advance and 2. 5-3 hrs point to point (45 min flight) vs 5-6 with train. plus less risk of delays. but it will depend on the day / hour. my days of train romance long gone, i fly if at all possible. you could try it one way just for the experience of the ice-the highspeed rail. booking trains in advance also drives down the price. air berlin flies alot between berlin and frankfurt, and kln or dusseldorf. there are other companies to the latter 2 cities (frankfurt kind of lufthansa playground) such as tui, germanwings. skyscanner.net a useful flight search engine. ryanair, the cattle car, flies "near" frankfurt but kind of a joke as the fra hain airport an hour away.

nrw thrill houses slightly cheaper than frankfurt (fra) area, but a lot more running around needed. fra has 5 or so fkk clubs so lots of choices, all fairly easily reached.

Not sure if I can answer all your points, but some comments might be helpful anyway.

1. Can't help you much apart from saying I haven't heard many good comments about Caligula. Have a look over on the partytreff forum for more info throughout Germany.

2. If you don't smoke, I would avoid AMS as a mongering location. Stick with Germany. Sure it is interesting to visit AMS and spend some time there, but far better opportunities for mongering quality in Germany.

3. My personal choice would be NRW and base yourself in Dusseldorf, if possible at a hotel that includes free public transport ticket (unless you have a car). A lot can be accessed by the excellent transport systems there.

4. I have never had a problem with safety anywhere in Germany. Sure there are places I would rather not walk alone at night, but a bit of research and streetsmarts will get you by safely.

5. Not really my thing, but I would suggest that astute marketing and good timing allowed these corporations to exploit a crowded space profitably.

6. I passed through Berlin last month and passed through some of the SW zones a few times. Nothing to grab my attention while I was there, but a lot of lower end providers present during the daytime, and some higher priced options at night time too. Nice to observe, and more than a bit sleazy, but not for me.

There are SW 'tracks' in several other cities too BTW, often frowned on by locals and far from legitimate. Info in the relevant city pages here.

2. Amsterdam not worth it -RLD glory days long gone-just a tourist rip off. Some good private apartments in den Haag though.
