I book everything in advance it probably saves a few bucks but not enough to equalize what a guy living in Europe could do. On the subject of safety, I have thought the RLD area is perfectly safe to me, but as with a lot of neighbourhoods around the world it can be about how you carry yourself, if you in any way look uncomfortable or like you are a fish out of water then a certain element of society will pick up on that, I am sure there are plenty hanging around the area waiting for an opportunity to arise, they have nothing better to do all day and only need one "mark" to bank the equivalent of an honest days work, or they really get you, a months work.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I was in Frankfurt not very long ago, and it seemed quite safe to me. I'll put it to you this way, it felt safer to me than Rome, or any Italian city or town I've ever been to, including Naples, and the Amalfi coast. Almost no incidents whatsoever in Frankfurt, there was an aggressive woman tout at the entrance of a strip club, but you'll find that even in London's Soho, that's par for the course. I agree with all posted will just tack on to the above as one guy asked me about safety in the RLD so I will put it here. I have been to some extremely shady areas abroad and in the USA here especially some absolutely terrible ones in DC and Chicago (don't ask why, this hobby is one) and I would say danger can lurk anywhere and one should always cover their tails but I find the entire RLD even if you walk to the far ends of the streets to be just fine; imo no one wants trouble and the police and even I suspect the girls pimps / Security seem to keep all behaved; neither want issues nor do the girls. As said above in case a quick exit needs to be made have your clothes handy ready to go.
