I would not stay near central station as it is expensive (because it is close the the banking quarter) and not a nice place to be. Also the red light area at central station is not worth visiting in my opinion.

To get to Sharks you take a thirty minute train ride to Darmstadt and either a cab or bus from there. If you take the bus you may have to wait twenty minutes for the bus depending on your timing. That depends a little on you. It can simplify things to stay near a train station. When you get in a cab you can just say take me to the train station rather than give an address or hotel. The draw back to the train station is the street noise, or maybe someone would prefer a different neighborhood. If someone wanted to walk to the RLD, it is next to the train station.
