I am looking at a holiday in Turkey (pretty dire for punting) and wondering whether to come back via Piraeus.

I looked up the Evans Attiki hotel and it has a revamped website which really gives a good indication of what an amazing place it is.

When I posted the above on the rest of the world board of a well known UK hobby forum someone complained that the website wasn't in English to which I replied:

The whole point is that this hotel isn't looking for tourists. Most of its business is letting rooms by the hour. To locals. Also, the proportion of tourists who want to stay in a bordello is vanishingly small.

However, the staff speak reasonable english, the prices are very reasonable, the hotel is in a fairly central location and the ambience whilst not exactly tasteful is quite out of this world. Booking the hotel from the UK was straightforward even though they don't do this much!

If you look at my posts, the first time I went there in 2007 I just used a room for an hour. The second, although I don't say so in my report, I suggested to my 85 year old Dad that I could find a totally unique hotel in Athens which would be a real experience. He was up for it and had to agree with me that he had never stayed anywhere like it. We stayed overnight for €70 in better than 3 star luxury (and I got to see Martha again in one of their other rooms!).

I am also sure that although this isn't something they offer on their site, the staff would happily organise an escort for you and that their contacts, language skills and knowledge would save you a lot of hassle, well worth, say, a €20 euro tip.

I Think there are 3 main reasons

1. Greece is a very family oriented society. Young adults can happily live with their parents into their thirties and move back in or beg money if they get into trouble. The people paying the bills are the middle aged parents and they are not going to make any money on the streets.

2. Athens is not that big a city and the working areas are very close to the main shopping areas and government buildings any Greek girl working would be running a big risk of getting spotted by someone she knew.

3. Greece is still main entry point for illegal immigrants into the EU and the main areas for WGs are dominated by immigrants. A desperate Greek girl would be driven out before she earned anything.

If you want a Greek girl your best shot is probably the UK where there are a lot of students who are strapped for cash and far enough from home not to get caught.
