Are "Magic Mushrooms" no longer legal in Amsterdam?

As long as the smartshops are open, they are legal. Some specific sorts of mushrooms are under investigation because of fatal incidents. This could lead to a ban on those specific sorts. Others will remain legal. Of course there are conservative elements in the present government that would like to use these incidents as an excuse to ban almost everyting like mushrooms, weed, etc. However it is unlikely that such a change in policy would get the support of a majority in the Dutch Parliament (Tweede Kamer).

They were available at all the smartshops in Amsterdam while I was there in February. A couple sources I just found with a quick google search tell me they are in fact legal, but it seems the powers that be are working on changing that.

I think they had outlawed dried mushrooms for a time up until last year, but even then you could buy them fresh and eat them that way or dry them yourself.

They were way overpriced though, even more than the weed. You'd get a much better deal at a Dave Matthews show!
