I am considering a short trip to Portugal in early December. Just need to get away from the demands at home and wanting to go somewhere other than Medellin which is usually my first and only consideration.

Lisbon is a fantastic place for tourism, but it doesn't market itself well. The Lisbon museum featuring priceless local and middle eastern art on tiles translates in English to the National Tile Museum, which to Americans sounds like something they would find next to a truck stop near the Youngstown, Ohio interstate exit. You don't see the Prada Museum in Madrid using an advertisement that says We Have Some Paintings Here.

It is very easy on the train to get to Sintra, which has the best maintained castles in Europe, or to Cascais with scenic beaches that have hiking and biking, or to Evora which is one of the best World Heritage Cities in Europe, but you see fewer ads for those places than you do for Italy, France or the United Kingdom (and you never see train pop-up ads like you do for other countries in Europe). Maybe it is for the best, since Italy and France seem quite put out by what too many tourist do to the infrastructure. I was stunned once when hiking the Sintra beaches, where they have Dinosaur footprints, to be the only person on the trails. Another little-known fact is that Portugal is one of the few European countries that has embraced Uber, making it affordable to go anywhere within 30 kilometers, including the Setubal / Sesimbra peninsula where they have beaches that connect with a national forest.

Your reviews of the EP ladies were fantastic, and your good information about their outside activities illustrates why I might do a disservice by directing people to gp-pt.net for any EP reviews. Thank you Monger88. This was my second trip to Portugal this year, the first was a non mongering short side trip on my way to a another city in Europe. You are right, Portugal has not marketed itself and remains the hidden gem in Europe. I did observe on this and my last trip that the tourists that flock to Portugal aside from the pensioners from Britain are young women from the US and Western Europe often traveling alone or with a female friend. That speaks volumes about the perceived safety of the city and country.

I did go to Cascais for a day but did not have time for Sintra and Setubal which Carlota described in vivid detail, so these two places along with Algarve remain on the agenda for the next trip. Great country, friendly humble people, and yes, the cheapest Uber rides though the scourge of Uber "surge fares" has reached Portgual too, still, the cheapest fares in Europe.
