I realise that this is not the correct site for this queery but you guys have been helpful in the past and I am hoping you can help me now.

I will be in Athens early next year and want my "Girl friend" from Bucharest to join me. She prefers to travel by Train or bus.

I can get onto the website for the train, but when I enter "Athens" as destination it doesn't recognise it. What do the Romanians call "Athens"? Can anybody tell me?
How about buses? Anybody know how long it takes or any other information? I'm getting desperate so ANY help would be appreciated. I am a little reluctant to just send her the money and let her sort it out.

We woke up late on Friday (about 2pm) and wondered down to see the Ceausescu Palace thingy. It was bizarre. The whole area around there is so unnatural and freaky that I was keen to leave. 2. Do apartments provide safety deposit boxes or do you just pray for the best as far as your money, passport, and other stuff? Are they safe for us, and our personal belongings when we go out.

3. Is it better to use taxis or to hire a car and driver for the whole trip?

4. Are there any 5 star apartments like penthouses?

5. What are the best places to find girls? I have read most of the posts, but I am confused because the discos and nightclubs have received both good and bad reviews.

It is intresting to see that you guys have the same problems I had at Herastrau Disco. man I wish I had wingman cause by yourself they come in like vultures to fresh meat. Both the bar staff and the girls. The barstaff have no morals, the moment you give one waiter or waitress a tip, they all come asking for tip. THEY ASK FOR TIP WITH NO SHAME. Its like harasment. I never had problems with the girls there but I could see how that happens, they have to buy at least 2 drinks to stay there for the night and sometimes 2 drinks turn into more and before you know it boom, they are *******. I was in Bucharest for a weekend of filth a few weeks ago, travelling with a wingman (two guys always do much better than one).

We arrived about 6pm on Thursday evening, having flown out of London about 12:30, 3.5 hour flight and 2 hours time difference. Otopeni airport is renovated, modern, user friendly and we were met immediately by our driver and house renter extraordinaire, Pedro. I booked the rental via www.romvision.ro. It was $70 a night and as it turned out, was in an ideal central location. It had airconditioning and was reasonably modern. They had some really cool flats, but the best ones were all single bedroom places. The one thing we werent expecting was the tax ... There is a 19% V.A.T. on it all, so we ended up paying more like $85 a night for the flat.

The two bars we were keen to check out were Planters and The Office, and a third venue, called Club Disco Herestrau. The first two are regular pick up bars, while the Herestrau place is for working girls.

Walking around near Planters and The office was a 13 year old kid who spoke fluent english (even with american accent) and was clearly working for a pimp. He heard us speaking english and gave us a card to call. The business card was simply marked "Costa" and then his number.

We were keen to check out two bars called "Planters" and "The Office" as they had been recommended in a number of places, including the wsg, but more importantly by the best looking of the romanian stewardesses on the flight out to Bucharest. So about midnight on Thursday we made it into Planters. It was a bit emptyish but there were girls in there trying to meet Bucharests wealthier guys. It was interesting, but being our first night there we wanted to check out a few places. We left there, walked around the corner and into "The Office". This place was pumping and the dyevs in there were quality. I got talking to a few and was having a great time with a 30 year old russian girl with a killer figure. She was very enthusiastic in her conversation and uber impressed when I could speak to her a little in Russian. It was clear that all the young girls in the bars spoke English. I was told by one of them that if they pretended not to understand, then it was only because they didnt want to talk to you, not because they didnt understand english. I managed to get the russkaya's number but then my mate had obviously been jilted by a girl he was talking to and decided he wanted to see more of Bucharest. More specifically he wanted to go to a titty bar.

There were plenty of bars around the streets where we lived with adult entertainment there. We walked into one of them, sat down at the bar and ordered a couple of beers. The place was pretty empty and I think we were the only customers there. The barman / manager called the girls over from the dance floor and asked if we fancied any of them. They werent great. One had bad teeth. They all had good bodies though. He wanted $100 for 3 hours per girl - but we decided it was quality or bust, so we passed on those and ended up staying for 40 minutes and having a few more beers. We payed the bill as we went, to make sure there were no surprises in the adding up, and chatted to the boss man for most of the time. Herestrau is about 10 mins away in a cab. Cabs by the way, are strange in Bucharest. They are supposed to run off meters that charge govt regulated prices. But these prices are absurdly low. As a result, there is a shortage of cabs. No-one wants a job that pays such low compensation. Normally you get the meter price. The cab ride out to Herestrau cost about $1.50. So we get there and the place looks a bit like a small convention centre, or school gymnasium complex. We went straight through to the centre of action, the dancefloor and tables around it. There was no entry fee. About 10 girls were on the actual dance floor, with another 15 or so sitting around tables beside the dancefloor. There were about 3 or 4 tables that had one or two guys (clients) sitting down, all surrounded by 2 times as many women. All in all there was probably about 30 - 40 women in there for the 5 or 6 guys. This was a Thursday night at 3:30am. We sat down at a table and immediately were joined by 4 or 5 women who spotted us walking into the place. We ordered a bottle of wine from the menu for 350,000 lei (just over $10) and the waitress returned with the wine. I gave her a 500,000 lei note. She went away and returned a few minutes later asking for another 150,000 lei. We kicked up a bit of a stink and asked to see the menu again to show her the price of the wine. She left and this time didnt return, with either change of the menu. So I guess we paid 500,000 lei for that wine.

Some of the girls left when it was clear were only intered in developing the conversation with a few of the more cute ones. One in particular had been eyeing me off for a while and when I waved the girl in the chair next to me away, the cute one came over to sit down. I was resting my hand on the seat of the chair when she came over and I simply turned it around, facing upwards. She was in an ultra mini skirt and deliberately sat right down on my upturned hand. I enjoyed a lovely 2 minute squelchy feel and began talking about prices. $100 was the price. No amount of discount suggestions or explanations that it was late made any difference. No matter who we asked in there, the price was 100, period.

I told her I didnt like her and no I wasnt interested. She was clearly annoying the rest of the girls at our table, who were having a fun time in general. She then started getting a bit heated and saying she didnt like being rejected like that, before ultimately moving onto threats. She started going on about stuff like "just you wait until you get outside, my friends will deal with you". She was Ukrainian if I remember correctly and she started crapping on about the gypsy mafia, the russian mafia et all waiting for us outside. We decided this bizarre experience was getting too much, so we were just going to pick 2 hot girls and leave. But then the psycho ***** started running around the dance floor, talking to every girl we approached in Romanian. I dont know what she told them but she literally was spoiling every potential deal we tried to make. Her aim for the rest of the night was to make sure we didnt get any girls. So we split up. I started arguning with her while my mate went to get 2 girls. As soon as psycho ***** saw what was going she left me, running over to the other girls to stop them going with us. It was bizarre. By now it was 4:45 and the place shuts at 5am. So we decided just to leave before the lack of cabs made for real problems. We left and she was still yelling at us as we walked out the door. I dont know why security didnt intervene on either side (If she was as well connected to thew cubs management as she claimed, she could have just had us thrown out, and if she was just a working girl, why didnt security throw her out? - its all a bit strange).

We took the cab back to our place and decided to use the card marked "Costa". We called Costa and got him to send round a girl. He quoted $100. I think we were too drunk to argue. While we waitied we counted up out Lei and it only came to about 90 bucks worth. I rummaged around and found 10 euros in my spare wallet.

Costa turned up with "Sylvia" a girl with clearly a decent dose of the gypsy in her, but she was quite pretty and well dressed. And again, she spoke fluent English. He was surprised to see two guys and wanted more money. Have just got back from Bucharest after a very successful mongering visit. I booked an apartment in Piata Unirii which was a bit spartan but clean and useful.
