It this does happen, all the Russian women will leave. It'd be the end of candyland for us.
Contrary to what the piece says, this isn't the first time the Russians are proposing this. It's been around since Yeltsin's time, and was rejected by US each time, and will be again.

    +1.

Cigars are outrageously expensive in this part of the world. Think West Europe prices almost x 2. Means a box of Romeo & Julieta Dukes 2009 (10 sticks) at 200€ in Ukraine compared to 125€ in Paris.

    Wise and appreciated gift indeed.

If you get your internet service from a cable system, everyone on the same (cable company) switch shares the system. So basically, everyone in your building would be sharing the same service. Maybe every building on your block, depending on how the cable company has their system designed. With DSL, the internet access is provided by the phone company through your phone line, which is dedicated to you, no sharing. Don't know how it works in Russia, but in the USA, your DSL service comes with it's own ip address, usually dynamic, not fixed. This is probably why it's so easy to identify you if you have DSL.

As far as the wireless part is concerned, makes no difference as to whether you have cable service or DSL. All that does is give you access to the internet. The wireless router simply connects to your cable box or DSL modem and provides local service in your flat. Most important is to make sure that the wireless router you buy will be compatible with the your cable box or DSL modem.

Also... if you set up wireless service in your flat, make sure to at least protect it with a password (it always amazes me how many people don't understand this). Otherwise, that cell of Chechen terrorists in the apartment upstairs will be able to tap into it and you might find the FSB knocking on your door.

    Calling all Geeks

Not exactly mongering talk, but I am in the process of getting an apartment in Moscow. Some come with Internet via Cable Modem and some come with Internet via DSL. I know that there is some sort of issue regarding MAC addresses for computers connected to cable modems vs DSL modems (something to do with registration with the Russian FCC) but what are the limitations when it comes to installing a WiFi router? If I get an apartment that gets Internet from a cable modem, am I able to put a WiFi router on that so that I can get WiFi throughout the apartment?

I have rented short term apartments over the years while in Moscow for a week at a time. Some have had Cable Modems and some have had DSL modems. If memory serves correct (no guarantees there) I seem to recall that those that also had WiFi were serviced by DSL modem.

As I understand it, the Russian FCC can map location of a computer hooked to a DSL modem because of how it is installed. But with a cable modem, it's more complicated so the Russian FCC requires that when a computer is connected to a cable modem, the MAC address of that computer must be registered with the cable provider. Where that gets complicated is when you have a visiting guest who wants to hook up to the Internet from that cable modem, you have to temporarily change MAC address to fool the modem into thinking it's still communicating with the computer that is register for use with that modem.

So I guess my question is this,"it is possible to connect a WiFi router to a cable modem in Moscow so that multiple computers, iPhones, iPods, devices can share the bandwidth"? If any of you out there are Uber-Geeks and can shed some light on this puzzle, I would be most grateful.

    Thanks,

    Jake

As Kurenda said, Russians are very superstitious, so if you give jewelry make sure it is newly made. Probably the best gift for a girlfriend is to take her shopping and let her choose for herself. She will value the gift you buy for her almost as much as the time you spent with her in choosing it.

For men, a bottle of spirituous drink is always appreciated. I have received many bottles of vodka from Russians as gifts, so not sure why that would be a problem. Whiskey or cognac is a good choice. The best is bourbon whiskey since scotch whiskey they can get anywhere, but a simple bottle of Jim Beam that goes for $15 or $20 here in the states can cost $100 in Moscow.

Smoking is still very popular in Russia, so if Papa is a smoker, Bez's box of cigars is a good choice. One of the most popular gifts I give is something as simple as a Zippo lighter. I gave one to a friend once, it was some kind of Harley Davidson special edition and he was very happy with it.

Giving the gift to Russian family? What is the type of family?

Parents like 50+ with student children? Or maybe they are already grandparents?

From your list DON'T give silverware since most probably it includes knifes.

In Russia never give watches, clocks, knifes and scissors to anyone. Russians are very supersticious and giving this items most people see as your wish for the death in their family.

Glassware and dishware are not suitable for present in normal conditions. Russians mostly buy then for cheap price since this are things for everyday use. Expensive glassware made of crystal glass is good present for the wedding only since it will be used in decorative role.

Technical stuff like digital camera, cell phone or even LCD TV can be given as present but make sure they can work in Russia. Especially TV since Russian TV standard is different from rest of the world. Keep in mind people can be offended with such gifts getting impression you think they are poor and you're showing off.

So what to give? For the male members bottle of drink is always acceptable. But it should be something unusual like drink from your own country or something that can't be easily found in Russia. Don't give vodka as present.

For the females good choice is jewelry made of gold. Especially cross pendants. But it should have destinctive orthodox christianity look so you should get it in Russia. Also women like candy boxes and flowers. With flowers pay attention you give the odd number like 9, 11, 15. Don't give even number like 10 or 12 this is used for funerals only. The best flower are roses, the red ones. Don't give white or yellow!

Cash is always good gift. Russians give money as present in many situations: at the wedding, at the birth of the child, when young man goes to do his military service, at the graduation at high school / university, etc.

You can give some amount to each family members with explanation you didn't know what to give them so you give them money to buy what they want. Again warning. Don't give money directly in hand, put it on the table and let them pick it up. What amount to give? It will depend on your possibility and situation. You're not expected to shower them with money, you can always come up with story that you're currently not in good financial situation, economic crisis, etc.

    Bring a gift from where?

    Some options,

    • A digit camera

    • A cell phone.

    • A set of silverware.

    • A set of glassware

    • A set of dishware

    • LCD TV?

    • Cash? (Maybe not)

    Thanks guys.
You going to wait to buy your gift in Russia, or bring it with you from your own country? If you want to stand out, it makes a little more sense to bring something not so easily bought in their own country, like souvenirs of your own country. Everything you mentioned is stuff they can buy at their bazaar, so it really won't impress them.

The first time I went to meet a new girl in the provinces, I asked her for some suggestions, for gifts for her mom and dad and brother. I brought the brother a fishing reel, I think I brought some seashells for the mother, and I think I brought the father some whiskey and a box of cigars.

Though they were all really happy, it didn't actually matter, because I decided not fuck the girl, so the gifts were basically a waste of my time.

Checked the site, there's a VIP zone. Some 200 us$. A Moscow girl told me that there was a lot of elite people (including dyevs of course) going there and watching the concerts from this VIP area. Very good atmosphere she said, not gopnik at all, very "arty".

    To buy tickets :

Really think about going there. Anyone interested to join?

    Spasibo Kurenda.

I thought the crowd was older. I know many 20-25 yo dyev (admittedly, not the "glamest") that love Russian Rock, listen at Nashe regularly, ad often go to concerts. That said, this is concerts, not open-air festivals. Personally I don't mind a few days of rudimental accommodation, pivo, vobla and shashliks if the atmophere and the music is good.

    proposal,

this year is 10th nashestvie festival.

it will be held 8, 9, 10 july 2011 around small town bolshoe zavidovo in tver oblast.

in the last few years it's always held somewhere in tver oblast.

i was several times on this festival including first one in december 1999 in moscow.

the crowd depends if there's a beer sponsor. in 2009 there were not beer sponsor and attendance was less than 100 000 people. in 2010 there were beer sponsors and attendance was more than 800 000. this year organisers expect one million people.

regarding girls this is not good place for mongering. many girls are **** like 14-15, often drunk and on drugs. huge presence of police. the better option is to take girl (or better girls) with you.

it's not for everybody, you need to dig russian music, cope with large crowds, end be willing to be bitten by nasty russian mosquitos.

for more information of this festival here's the website. it's unofficial so not all informations are necessary true.

it's in russian only and those who don't read it then tough luck.
