i agree with prosal, master & margarita would be at the top of any russian's favorite reading list. another novel by bulgakov that most russians know and love is heart of a dog.
lermontov and gogol are also favorites, but i would ditch dostoevsky, at least as far as popular writers are concerned. while russians may be proud to count such a deep thinker as one of their own, i think there are very few russians who actually enjoy reading him: mainly he is something that they suffer through while in school. the common joke among russians is that if you have trouble sleeping, keep a copy of dostoevsky at your bedside: a chapter of crime and punishment will put you right to sleep.
a better choice might be turgenev, whose writing and subject matter are much more accessible to the average russian. his short novel, mumu, is standard reading for most grade-school kids in russia.
and don't forget chekhov, not only for his plays, but for his short stories.
last, but not least (particularly if you want to impress a young russian woman) , don't forget the poets. russians love nothing so much as their poets. every russian knows pushkin, if you can recite a few well-chosen lines from yevgeni onegin, that will go a long way towards impressing a young russian woman. his letter from tatyana to onegin is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of russian poetry.
also yesenin, one of russia's favorite poets, who not only wrote some beautiful poetry, but whose tragic life and romantic death continue to inspire young russian women.
and finally, vladimir vysotsky, one of russia's most popular and beloved contemporary poets.

Posts: 249Is intelligence and education in general important regarding Russian girls?
"A Russian girl wants someone she respects"
I get the impression, however perhaps I am misunderstanding, that being cultured, educated etc sort of a professor type (I don't want to give any identifying information, however I am an academic) would be a big hit with the young sexy kittens in Odessa or Kharkov.
Am I right?

It's the story, told in the first person, of Sergei Pavlovich Bunin, born in the Soviet Union in the early 60's, who progresses from being an unemployed youth to becoming the President of the post-Soviet Ukraine. Andrei Kourkov is best at humour, in particular the absurdities of post-Soviet life in Ukraine. Corrupt politicians, incompetent officials, etc. Absurdly wonderful book, a great read, highly recommanded.

BTW his other books are also great, notally his hits, 'Death and the Penguin' and 'Pengouin Lost'. Wonderful, funny, tragic and brilliant books packed with intrigue and mordant humour : Viktor tracks down his beloved Penguin, Misha, through Ukraine, Russia and even Chechenya. True gems.

For those who ignore it, Pelevin is the most popular modern (and totally nutty) author in Russia, and "Generation P" is his cult book. The book tracks the adventures of a young intellectual, Vavilen Tatarsky, who becomes a kopiraiter (an advertising copywriter) in kiosks held by Chechens, and is adrift in the glamorously corrupt Moscow of the early 90s. But while the novel ends with the 90s, the film seems to continue until a near future.

You never stop to surprise me, not only you have huge knowledge about almost all Brazil and you travelled to places in FSU where most here neither know where they are but even Russian literature?
I know more or less all your "top five" from the school, surely not easy-books to be read, but they belong to the story of Russia with no doubt.
Nice, really nice in the forum supposed to be only about prostitutes to find one who can appreciate the whole meaning of RUSSIA!
I hope, even more than before, that sooner or later, better sooner , we will meet somewhere in FSU and yeah, no matter where, cause with the right buddy you do not need a particular good place to have.... fun, you create the Fun, even easier in FSU !

Even on my mamba profile, I put a lot of emphasis on cultural knowledge. It's not a direct ticket to the girls panties, but it definitely wins me points.
BTW, my "top five" Russian classics are:
- Master & Margarita. Bulgakov (a book that ALL Russians place, with good reasons, at the Pantheon of literature)
- The Dead Souls. Gogol
- A Hero of Our Time. Lermontov.
- Crime & Punishment. Dostoievski
- The Life of Arseniev. Bunin

The legend of the greedy Russian girl only eager to retrieve you from your last €€ by dragging you in financially suicidally places is simply ridiculous. Treat a Russian woman nicely, open yourself emotionally, be confident and "strong" but nice and romantic at the same time, always show her some male courtesy and respect, and you'll be surprised what she will do for you without you even asking.

Its like expensive jewelry, if you're going to worry about the price, then you can't afford it to begin with.
If you're not sure some girl 30 years younger than you, that you've never met, really loves you, then you might want to get back up on that turnip truck you just fell off of.

However I wonder if it's really cost effective. Figure the expenses that might be involved in giving someone who MAY be merely a gold digger full access to my home, compared to just paying for some temporary companionship. Sort of semi-pro, girlfriend, style.
I'm not sure what's cost effective.
If I thought the girl really loved me, as she claims to, it would be worthwhile.
