I guess I learned a lesson. I have even ordered a "secret wallet" for future travels to other places I will visit.

As for Russia. It is too bad. I found the women beautiful, but was really put off by the experience in SP, and as a result even stayed in during my trip to Moscow. I saw a report regarding the Boarhouse (I was planning a visit) and the police situation there, and decided it just wasn't worth it a second time. So I stayed in. Germany was better. FKK's are truly relaxing and must more cost effective. Plus you can take a licensed cab. Which really is you best protection in most countries.

Unfortunately this has been going on for years. My experience of this was back in 2004. I haven't been to Marstall since and I now major on the salons - cheap, safe and plenty of them.

I was told a similar thing by a Russian girl (who happened to be a criminal defense attorney) - if stopped by the police, and harrased, just whip out your cell phone, and tell them you're calling the consulate. She suggested you don't really need to call them - just pretend. The police will get scared, and walk.

As for Marstalls - I've been there several times, never had a problem - but I speak Russian, and don't always stick out as a tourist.

Thought I would report some danger, since we all learn from this forum.

I was recently in SP, and went to Marstalls on a Friday evening since I had read about it in reviews and it was close to my hotel.

I got in around 11 and really liked the place. Good music, women dancing on the dancefloor and on the bar (strippers), and a good mix of working girls and others. Most of the working girls were ugly, but it was my first night out.

I left the place at 4 in the morning, and as I left I was approached by the police to show my documents. I had copies and that seemed to be OK. They left in their van and a few minutes later I am approached by more police and asked again. I told them I just did this but provided documents. Next thing I knew they had my wallet and my cash. I complained they took my cash, and then they had me in handcuffs and on the ground. Perhaps 30 minutes later with another scammer who said he was my legal advisor, I was let go. But my cash was gone. Luckily they did not take my watch or credit cards, but they did rip my leather jacket. My advisor called me a cab, really nice of him.

I travel around the world, and am typically careful, and have never encountered this.

For the remainder of my trip, I will stay in my hotel, and wait until I go back to Germany where people are civilized. Guess they will get my money.

I have read now that this is a problem in Russia (unfortunately it is a bit late). While I could accept a gang hit, it is hard to believe from police. As said in another forum, I guess they don't know about the internet.

Be safe out there, and not just from the women.

A couple of things about the militsia... 1st the ones outside of Marstalls are sometimes not even from SPB. Generally if they have a vehicle they are legit, but if they are walking up to you often they come into town from the outlying derevnyas to hit up tourists for cash. 2nd carry only the amount of cash that you want to lose. The rest stick in your shoe / underwear etc. I normally carry 500 Roubles in my passport coming out of the bar and for $15 the cops go away. Watch your mobile phone as well. If you are really concerned stop by the consulate and get a business card from the consular section. Lastly stay in well lit areas where there are people around and if you are truly concerned for your safety say "Ya Americanets, Ya naziviou consulstva" (I am American I am calling the consulate) take your consular business card and start dialing. I have had militisioneers just walk away to easier prey. Have fun, stay safe, and friends don't let friends go to Marstalls.

A while back I posted on the BBK thread that I had been mugged in day-light
by a policeman. It happened as I was walking from Grace Hotel toward Sukhumvit Rd. There is a police booth at this intersection. The policeman waves at me to get closer, when I got to the door this SOB pulls me in and closes the door and starts going through my pockets mumbling something in Thai.This bastard could not get my money that I kept under my shirt in a pouch. Miraculously, another policeman got in the booth so I got out fast!

It is unfortunate what happend to you - especially the part about being handcuffed.

Unfortunately, ripoffs of foreigners by police in St. Petersburg, and other major EE towns, is a regular event. Typically, they just claim there is something or other wrong with your documents, and hit you up for a bribe - $20 or so, nothing major, nothing violent. Much less often, force becomes a factor - I've lived in and out of EE for many months at a time, and never had force become an issue (though paid many a $20 'penalty').

Marstall, in particular, is know by police to be frequented by foreigners. There is almost always a cop located at the door, on busy nights - I figure he works with his buddies to hit up the foreigners (though I never had a problem at/near Marstall, I've heard many stories about it).

Just the same - don't let it get you too down. Overall, it really is as safe, or safer, in EE as in WE/US. The biggest danger is, in fact, the police! You have to avoid them like the plague! I literally cross the street if I see them on the sidewalk ahead of me...

Tribunal- Overpriced with a small but ever changing line of pros
Mistral- Always fun but with the same pros since "God was in short pants"
Cafe Magrib- Upper class dance club with pricey pros that need to be weeded out of the "regular" girls

Golden Dolls and Maximus- Strip clubs with CONSTANT harassment for 100rbl tips for no good reason

Colorado Otets (Papa Colorado)- A fair strip club/ burlesque show in the middle of Valilevsky island with overnight dance/burlesque shows in the front and the same beautiful dancers stripping in the back.

Also, about the more practical matters:
Do average Russian women still refuse to accept a drink bought for them if they have no interest in you? This brutal honesty from Russian women is unique in over 20 countries I have visited, including Poland and Ukraine.

Do Russian women still find people of asian, latin and african background "exotic" and openly hit on them?

Does the Russian warmth of spirit (Dusha), much aided by vodka, still make quick friends out of stone faced Russian men and women?

Finally, are the bridges still the scourge of the midnight monger? Or have they finally opened a subway or shuttle service?

Russia, including St.Pete, has changed a lot in the last few years, but one thing has stayed the same... St.Pete still does not have a decent pickup bar. Tribunal, Marstalls and Magrib all suck in one way or another.

For pro sex best sources are the apartments/salons... take the girls home for 2 hours for about $100-120.

I'm white, so maybe I just wasn't watching. All I can say is that I have seen some foreigners of darker skin do quite well, but seen plenty more not doing well at all. I suppose it is classic YMMV. Latin guys probably do the best of the three you mentioned and Africans definitely have their "fans" as well. Really don't know on Asians... don't see them much.

Point is, really any person with decent game and some success in his home country with women should find nice Russian girls to enjoy and sleep with regardless of skin color. More important than skin color are other factors. It may not happen on opening night, but usually does by date 2 or 3 at the latest. Most often though, if she meets you a second time she'll sleep with you.

Overall, I think you should just read the last 2 dozen or so posts on the St.Pete board and check out the reports of distinction thread. Most of the info still applies.

Additionally, Russia is becoming more and more "Euro-ized" or "westernized". This doesn't mean that the Russian soul and character is fundamentally changing, but they are more and more exposed to the outside world and for better or worse, adapting to modern times.

So far you do not do anything wrong in all these business the FSB will not take care if you get every evening in a Jacuzzi with a couple of teens, it’s not their business. And that’s all.

I know I have been checked several times, even personally for a bribe questioning (police asked me bribes, but I was the wrong person to do it with…), I have been in several military areas, nobody is questioning who you are fucking or what you are drinking… Of course there is still a “dislike” against homosexuals, but we are not here for that…

This could be a silly enquiry: but if you were aware of any for this. In the old time during cold war, it used to be that natural resoueces-related personnel are cautioned from state dpt as well as certain British contingencies that we should be aware that the surveillance of Russian intelligence is strict and 24 hours anywhare, particularly petrolium related-personnel.
