I've made a couple of trips to Piter in the last several months. I've been intending to post a comprehensive trip report, but haven't gotten around to it.

I've spent quite a bit of time on Mamba, and I'd advise against any hopes on that front. Many of the profiles are shameless bait-and-switch, and many of the hotties that are seeking a sponsor will see you as a short term visitor and will be not be interested.

You might need to look into your visa situation before you settle on a plan.

Normally if you're stopping off for one night on a cruise in St P or elsewhere in Russia then you are restricted to following the pre-organised tour associated with the ship.

To do your own thing you probably need to get a separate visa for yourself through the usual channels which is another expense involving "visa support" etc.

Ya zhdu na úlitse (I am foreigner. I don't speak Russian. I wait on street). Repeat this sentence at least three times as an answer to anything the lady says to you and hang up. If you are lucky, within 10 minutes a young woman will show up and bring you to the apartment. If no one shows up within 15 minutes, go home.

Interesting strategy, I guess necessity is the mother of invention. Did this strategy work for you?

It had been quite some time that I wanted to visit Piter. Since the credit crisis also hit my company, I decided to travel on my own. This also had the advantage that I could arrange everything myself and optimize my journey for fun instead of business. So I arranged a visa, rented an apartment, got some cash and took the plane. My driver came to pick me up at the airport. While waiting, I politely waved away all the guys who approached me for a taxi. There seems to be a system of semi-legal and semi-illegal drivers. Haven’t figured it out how it worked.

After arriving at the apartment there were a few problems to solve before I could start with what I was here for.

1st problem: get money

OK this is an easy one. Piter is literally covered with ATM machines which give you all the rubles you need. Maybe not in the immediate vicinity of your apartment, but always in the city centre and around metro station close to your apartment.

2nd problem: get food

Now I had money, I could fill the fridge of my apartment. Unfortunately the small kiosks that were the closest had only a very limited selection (unless you wanna live on bread and vodka). So I had to travel further to find a mini-market. I could not carry everything I bought at so I halted a gipsy cab to bring me home. By the way, you should not do this when you don't have a map of Piter, so buy one before you come here or you get lost.

3rd problem: get viagra and condoms

Fortunately this is now relatively easy in Piter. The time that condoms were not for sale is long gone and you can choose between national and international brands in all tastes (literally). Viagra and Cialis are available without prescription and can be bought from every pharmacy. Prices are higher than in the west but not extremely.

4th problem: get a Russian SIM card

To avoid freak costs for your own western SIM card, buy Russian prepaid one. You can buy a SIM card for a little more than 100 rubles, that's not the problem, but getting the thing work in your cell phone is a different thing. Finally it turned out that my old Nokia that I brought to Russia (I did not want my new one get stolen) could not handle this new type of SIM card. When I put it in my new Nokia, everything worked fine eventually. Megafon wanted my passport. MTS did not ask for passport. Beeline did, but when I answered my passport was at the hotel they just gave the SIM to me.

6th problem; get Internet in your room

I traveled cheap, so the apartment had no Internet connection and my wireless card showed zero wireless networks. 1st strategy: you understand/speak/read Russian If you speak at least average Russian, than you are a lucky bastard. You are able to communicate with the ladies and understand their directions. You have bought a detailed map of Piter in Russian which you can actually read and use and you know the Piter metro system. You are able to transliterate the station name and street name that the operator tells you (Kupchina) to Cyrillic text? That you can find in the index and on the map. You are able to find any apartment at any location, and you are in danger to meet freebees, you lucky bastard.

2nd strategy: you don't speak Russian but the operator speaks English

If you don't speak Russian but the operator speaks English, you are still a lucky bastard. You are able to communicate with the operator and understand her directions. You might have some trouble to find to the building but hiring a taxi might solve that problem. You must find a way to write the address (street name etc) phonetically on a piece of paper and find a taxi driver who understands the address, or let the driver talk to the operator with your mobile phone. You will understand local directions and will find the door, door code, floor number and apartment number. And get laid. Don’t forget to arrange a taxi to get back

3rd strategy: you don't speak Russian but another girl speaks English

See strategy 2. The unexpected problem that might show up that the girl who is guiding you might suddenly become unavailable (because she has a customer) during your travel to the apartment. Then you find yourself suddenly within a range of 100 meters from the apartment but are unable to locate it.

Piter revisited: Some final observations

What I underestimated was the time to travel. Although you can travel between two metro stations within 10-45 minutes, finding the apartment takes sometimes more time than the metro journey itself. And you have to get back too. At a certain moment I found myself spending more time in Piter’s metro system and streets than in a girl’s pussy. Finally I got tired from traveling for two hours or more for a single ride and got lazy, visiting only the apartments and salons close to where I lived.
