It also has a good Finnish department (or faculty, as they call them).

The point is that a foreign visitor might be welcomed by students in Petrozavodsk but Petrozavodsk is way too small a town for mongering (280000 inhabitants).

What I meant by my comment is that it's $400+ to get from Moscow to Ufa by plane so it's unlikely (unless you have plenty of disposable income) that a monger would come all the way to Moscow AND THEN fly all the way to Ufa just to get laid.

MY POINT (and yes I do have a point) is that if you do find yourself in Ufa (for God knows what reason) there are more ready, willing and able devushkas that you can shake a stick at.

Point on regional "B" cities is time and repeat visits. To get on your feet and running you need more time than in Piter, Moscow or Kiev. I think to really enjoy a regional city, 7-10 days are minimum... but yeah, they can be a gold mine. Obviously when you return to a place, you only need 1-2 days to climatize again.

I flew from Peiter to Vnukovo on SkyExpress a few weeks ago. Not bad at all. However, just as we were buckling our seat belts I notices that the buckle had an old VARIG logo on it. A quick scan around the cabin revealed that this Boeing 737 had once been a Brazilian VARIG airplane!!!! Take about funny. As someone who used to fly around Brazil extensively during the early 90's, it was a funny and nostalgic trip.

Later that day, I flew on Utair from Vnukovo to Ufa. However the Utair flight was on a TU-143 (I think). Both flights were decent and relatively cheap. No trouble at all.

And we know who good the Brazilians were at maintaining their aircraft... ))

One airline to avoid in "Air Union". It's a Russian conglomerate of several regional airlines... in principal no problem... however TWICE they have cancelled my flight without warning because they didnt fill enough seats. A serious hassle.

Both are cheap airlines, but have new aircraft (Boeing and Airbus) and fly out of Moscow's newer privately-owned and operated airport hubs Domodedovo and Vnukovo, far superior to that shithole Soviet relic Sheremetveyo. And you can book e-tickets online. www.s7.ru for example.

Been wanting to hit several cities in the area from Ekat to Irtusk for a while. I think to do it right I will need at least a month.

Nice thing is now Aeroflot is a member of NWA alliance, which has opened up the country to cheaper travel with air miles from the states. 60k miles to anywhere in the country.

Ufa isn't in Siberia, it's in the Urals.

I have also made the mistake of thinking everything east of the Urals is Siberia, but Siberia doesn't actually begin until Yekaterinburg... actually just after Yekaterinburg. My innocent question almost started a fight between two Russian colleagues once while eating dinner in Yekaterinburg... the one insisited Yekaterinburg was the "gate to Siberia", while the other insisted Siberia began just outside of the city. They couldn't agree so we just drank vodka instead, which actually did come from Siberia....
