Father of my friend has lived in Kiev for decades and was mugged on Maidan square, assaulted for his wallet during the day in the crowd. Hit in the head. Things happen.

There are online crime maps available, showing crime frequency and recent reports.

I wouldn't rent first or second floor apartment. Burglaries in Kiev are frequently performed through the second floor balconies. Some of those are reported in reviews on AirBnB:

"Somebody has broken a balcony lock and committed a theft in the night, while we were inside the apartment and slept. Landlord has contacted her assistant, who promptly changed all the locks in the apartment, secured a balcony door e. T. see. , in the same time we heard from him that it was not a first theft in this apartment, but they experienced one more 1 year ago."

Chances of valuables "lifted" by visiting ladies are low, but not zero, especially with independents.

Generally speaking, Kiev is safe.

Central Kyiv is very safe, as are the middle class suburbs (Pozniaki, Obolon). There are some rough suburbs however, where solitary forigners can expect to be confronted by robbers armed with knives or worse, whether day or night. Photoslider mentioned Troeschina. There are also some rough areas in Solomyanskyi district towards Vyshneve. Or so I've been warned. No reason to be in these areas unless you are seeking very cheap drug-addict prostitutes (probably infected with HIV).

Kiev you can find a lot of negatives things, but safety is one of the best parts about Kiev. Extremely safe, I remember many times being drug walking home from the clubs, never an issues. Couple times the police gave me a hard time just hold your ground and they will back off completely.

I want to thank everyone for the logistical info and share the results found here and on other sources, for the benefit of all those who will visit Kiev the first time and have no contacts or trusted girls.

You must remain in the center, close to the areas indicated in red on the image, preferably zone 2:

Pros:

1) proximity to many clubs and massage centers within walking distance, always useful if the appointments do not end well.

2) areas with lots of safe public places for the first meetings and a walk.

3) restaurants and other attractions for moments of solitude or rest.

4) easy travel arrangements, public transport and taxis.

Cons:

1) hotel prices and apartments a little higher.

2) you should always ask before you book if In the apartments and hotels you can host different girls at no extra cost or gifts, at every hour.

Please let me know your opinions. Do you think it would be useful to make a list of hotels and apartments that are friendly and safe?

There are occasional shootings mostly from traumatic weapons and very rare targeted assassinations with explosions due to unavoidable influx from the war and "friendly" northern neighbor perpetrating its understanding of the world order, but the ultimate effect is nowhere near 4th of July Independence Day in Chicago two weeks ago when 36 people were shot, 5 of them fatally. In Kiev the most frequent reason is the road rage due to bad traffic. Mongers do not drive, taxi drivers mostly behave..

More poor neighborhoods far away from downtown, like Troeschina, have more drugs and other crime problems.

Stay downtown, do not look concerned, do not flash cash or expensive valuables, and you'll be just fine. 5-10 blocks around K is more than enough for most visitors.

I do think in certain situations it may get dangerous. As a beginer, you may indeed try hotels first. A good choice might be the "Tourist Hotel". There is a security guy but I think no extra charge is due. I never took a "sex for money girl" with me, but some civilians did come. I did, however, book always double room for two persons (which is almost same price as single room).
