Wanted to report some experience I had in past months during 3 trips I had in Kiev, it might be helpful.

I always rent an apartment in the center through some local rental agency: it is cheap, great service, airport pickup, everything you need. You land and get to your place, no hotel hassle, no doormen and you do all you want to do.

You get a local (Kiev Start) SIM card for a few EUR to get data connection so that you can run messaging app and use map to move a bit around (if you need). I don't speak a work of the local languages so it is bit harder.

Well here there is no recession in Kiev, it's still pretty easy to find a job, but salaries are very low, the lowest in Europe with Moldavia. Most of the people get around 100-300 $ a month.

You can try to use relax or some other escort websites here. You are right not going for the cheapest option, that would bring you most of the time disappointment.
