Most if not all banks at their ATMs have recently put a limit of 1000 grivna per day per card. At the current exchange rate, that is now about $84 and may drop further. You can always go to the ATMs at various banks but you will incur higher currency conversion and multiple bank fees further driving down the effective exchange rate.

Credit cards do work normally so restaurant, hotel, bar, club, store, supermarket and other such purchases are not a problem.

The only good news is that you no longer need your passport to make any currency exchange.

I also suggest that you change any monies on the day and in the exact amount you expect to utilize these payments since the exchange rate has been dropping to the betterment of the dollar / Euro. A week ago the rate was about 11 grivna to the dollar, now is is 11. 90. I would also suggest that you make your payments tot he ladies only in grivna and not in dollars or euros thereby substantially reducing your costs.

I just want to share that a friend of mine was punched in the face today in Kiev. He was sitting on a K street bench and a bum asked him for money. After my buddy said no, this homeless piece of drunken stared at him for a moment and then hit him before walking away. I asked my friend if it could have been avoided and he said yes. When the street bum approached him on the bench, he should have walked away immediately rather than sit there like a sitting duck. Lesson learned. For the record, it was a true homeless person and not a politically motivated thug.

I am sorry to hear about your friend. I hope he is doing well. However, to those who are considering Kyiv and are uncertain, please do not think this is the norm. In my opinion, its a random act of violence and could happen in any city. I am from Canada and I've heard far worse than this from my country and I certainly don't consider Canada an unsafe country. In my opinion, as someone living in Kyiv now since before the protests at Maidan, I think this is just bad luck. What is more, if a homeless person punched me the story would not end there, that's for sure.

I have been to UA maybe 10 times never had a problem I hope my luck doesn't run out, one time a man on Kreschatic approached me for money, he could speak Emglish, I just said NO and kept walking, in the same trip I traveled to Odessa for a week and the same man was in Odessa city center and ask me again for money, I couldn't believe it, I guess thats his job traveling to city centers asking foreigners for money.

When I am on the streets I assume everyone is a suspect, I stay away from the police, I am not friendly if a local approaches me I just do my thing and keep walking if I am not interested.

BTW-Is there a supermarket right next to McDonalds on Metro Krechatic?

I never had a problem in Kiev after numerous trips. Normal street smarts would dictate that you have to keep moving when approached by the homeless. For me, the worse was the girl bums that would follow you. Learned quickly to duck into a store in that situation.

Sorry I don't know about the supermarkets. I left Kiev back in December. I liked shopping in the Billy stores. One by the Rynok and one under Maiden next to Vodka Bar.

I just returned from a short stay in Kiev. It is an incredible time to be there after what's been happening recently. After visiting the city, I decided to spend Sunday night at Arena (http://www.arena-kiev.com/). It was empty, but the English speaking hostess was friendly enough and agreed to show me the different bar, restaurants, and clubs. She explained that the club across the square was new and worth a visit. So we walked over there together. There was a bar and a dance floor. There was one nice looking woman sitting at the bar. I decided to stay and order a drink for 90 UAH (6 euros). I soon started chatting with the bartender and then the woman at the bar. She was very friendly and spoke enough English for us to have a few laughs. I decided to offer her a drink. The bartender bought a different drink menu than on one I used. She indicated the glass of white wine that the woman ordered. I followed her finger on the menu to the column on the right. It indicated 150. She asked if I agreed and I said sure. She then poured the wine like it was liquid gold. The bartender had asked me to pay for my drink as soon as I ordered, but not the woman's drink. I became supicious and immediately asked for the bill. The amount was 528 UAH (35 euros). I asked why not 150 UAH. She said that 150 was the amount of milliliters! What a scam. I immediately paid and left the bar, never to return. On the way out, I went back to speak to the friendly hostess. I explained what happened. She said it was my fault for not reading carefully the menu. What a scam.

Later than night, I went to Dolly Salon (http://www.salondolly.com/). For less then what I spent at Arena, I had an incredible 1 hour erotic massage.
