I had already decided the same. I wasn't actually writing for those who weren't listening or reading carefully, or making smug comments that they can afford to ignore my advice. That is to their own peril anyway. My intent was to clarify things for the general readership which does read and benefit from cogent advice, and is generally interested in things like how much is proper to offer a studentka for sponsorship. It's something that comes up for mongers in Kiev. I have written enough on the topic. So there is enough there in the thread so that a careful reader will not get misdirected by all the talk about Kiev having higher income jobs in sectors of the job market that have nothing to do with studentkas' employment options. It is not in question that the average of all salaries and wages in Kiev city is higher than the rest of Ukraine's cities and oblasts / districts. I have never written otherwise. If you wish to pretend that I am disputing that fact, and posture yourself as if you are correct on this point versus what I have written, you may mislead fellows like CB and others, who haven't read carefully. But it does little to further the advice needed to be given about how much money is reasonable to offer a studenka for a sponsorship support arrangement. So you continue to becloud this issue with your mistaken input.

What I have tried to explain previously is a simple point, which you or anyone else should be able to understand...

She indicated the glass of white wine that the woman ordered. I followed her finger on the menu to the column on the right. It indicated 150. She asked if I agreed and I said sure. She then poured the wine like it was liquid gold. The bartender had asked me to pay for my drink as soon as I ordered, but not the woman's drink. I became supicious and immediately asked for the bill. The amount was 528 UAH (35 euros). I asked why not 150 UAH. She said that 150 was the amount of milliliters! What a scam. I immediately paid and left the bar, never to return. On the way out, I went back to speak to the friendly hostess. I explained what happened. She said it was my fault for not reading carefully the menu. What a scam.

For those of you contemplating coming to Ukraine and Kiev now and in the near future, make absolutely sure you bring with you enough cash to ensure that your paid pleasure is secure. You can bring into Ukraine up to $10, 000 without declaring it.

Most if not all banks at their ATMs have recently put a limit of 1000 grivna per day per card. At the current exchange rate, that is now about $84 and may drop further. You can always go to the ATMs at various banks but you will incur higher currency conversion and multiple bank fees further driving down the effective exchange rate.

Credit cards do work normally so restaurant, hotel, bar, club, store, supermarket and other such purchases are not a problem.

The only good news is that you no longer need your passport to make any currency exchange.

I also suggest that you change any monies on the day and in the exact amount you expect to utilize these payments since the exchange rate has been dropping to the betterment of the dollar / Euro. A week ago the rate was about 11 grivna to the dollar, now is is 11. 90. I would also suggest that you make your payments tot he ladies only in grivna and not in dollars or euros thereby substantially reducing your costs.

As usual, Uke Boy is offering some useful advice. If you are coming to Kyiv you should bring as much Western currency as possible. The economic (not to mention the political) situation here is in dramatic flux. No telling what will happen tomorrow let alone next week.

About currency exchange rates, they might be at 1 USD for 11. 60 UAH on the internet, but not on the streets of Kyiv. I was on and around Kreshchatyk all afternoon today. The highest I saw was 1 USD for 11. 25 UAH (private exchange booths) while the lowest was an inexplicable 1 USD for 10. 90 UAH (banks). I find the exchange rate here is often sluggish to keep up with the rates posted on internet sites. I've also read reports on the internet by Ukrainian economists that the UAH with hover around 10 UAH to the dollar this year. It has already jumped from 8 to 10 and then quickly back to 9 in late February/ early March. Who really know how far the UAH will drop before it rises again.

As for ATM's, there was a run on withdrawing UAH in mid to late February during the height of the fighting which forced banks to place withdrawal restrictions on customers. However, that does not seem to be the case in Kyiv now. I withdrew 6000 UAH just an hour ago with no problem. I watched the man ahead of me withdraw around 2000 UAH with no difficulty. This was done at a very busy 'Agricola' bank at the base of my apartment outside of the city center. This is just my experiences in Kyiv, for what it is worth.
