I agree 100%. I went first time 4 years ago, so I don't know the real gold era of Kiev, come back 16 times in the last years, 95% in Kiev, big error, and for long time.

I been sat back reading recent reports here of all the doomsday nonsense, wingers and moaners complaining about lack of girls, scammers, all the 8's and 9's long gone, most of you guys haven't got a fucking clue how to go on now have you? Czechoslovakia was much greater before the Czech Republic. Not bringing up past glories but I had a real blast in Prague very late 80's which was my first introduction to a country behind the Iron Curtain.

In my early 20's adventurous and with a Mustang bought cheaply in Belgium, I headed to Nurenberg and crossed the border. Several return trips followed and I thought it was Sex heaven on earth but so was Warsaw and Budapest in those days when I went exploring them on my own with no language skills and no contacts. A good 18 months gap year filled with cheap Alcohol and free sex. Got to say it was very safe in those communist days with hardly any scams. .

Lucerna club in Prague was the equivalent of River Palace in Kiev, few hookers sat by the bar but the majority were freebies. BTW Lucerna its still there in Prague but its mostly a music club these days, so I read.

Another Prague landmark in those days was Europa Bar & Cafe which was the easiest place to meet Young East German girls touring Prague.

That was a truly Different world altogether.

How many times do I have to say that whether you're fluent or not, if you are new in town, you need to make a lot of friends. The less fluent you are, the more you need at least a few friends that speak SOME english. It's not THAT hard to find, but it takes a lot of trying. Don't expect great results if you're not willing to put forth the effort. It's an investment. Shyness won't get you anywhere. Expect failure, get back up everytime you get knocked down. Take chances. I can't say anything about how much Kharkov's changed since 2009, I moved on. I can say that what I studied here proved to be true, in both what I experienced down south on the Volga, and because I have not read anything here, or seen enough fotos, to make me believe that I missed much in Kharkov, compared to the last 9 years traveling in the heart of our Motherland.

It can be kind of depressing dragging out some of the past glories, you know, there's no going back. Kiev itself was way off the charts before they bulldozed the little fountain and built the fucking mall underground, way back when mamachka Zhana ran her expensive dyevs agency in the Kyiv Post. Fuck, that's even before Mystery tramp and that whole ungodly era.

Please don't discount the importance of having the right acquaintances, unfortunately all of mine in Ukraine dried up. Still, I'm convinced if I had invested more time, spoke better Russian then, and made more of an effort to make the right friends, it surely could have kept me from leaving. For me, Russian pastures were much greener. You can't stop progress. Think about it, who would've ever imagined that Putin would outlaw smoking in bars? If that's doesn't tell you what you need to know, you might want to increase your Ritalin dose.
