I, like others, have been critical of Rio over the years but it still remains (in my view) the best strip club in Kiev.

Whilst the refrain RTFF always goes up whenever there's an inquiry from a newbie there has not actually been any detailed reports on Rio for some years. Not, I think, since it all kicked off with Little Joey.

Overview:

Rio is not a cheap option. It is not an alternative to Mamba or for those intent on finding a little gem on the streets. It is however a pleasant enough place to while away the hours and will probably not cost you much more than Buddha Bar or a top night club if you choose to take out a girl. Despite what others say, I've never met an 8 plus girl in a bar or night club who didn't insist on $150 upwards for a covered 1 hour experience. With Rio you can properly expect 3 hours if you leave the club before midnight.

Making an entrance:

Entrance at time of writing was 300 hryvnia which is added to your drinks bill when you leave. The drinks themselves are pricey but not ridiculously so (150 hryvnia for a cocktail) and no different from most of the top restaurants, hotels and nightclubs in Kiev.

When you arrive security can be quite intimidating but, as always, if you're polite and respectful they're fine.

Finding your level:

Having been frisked you'll next meet the door manager (usually a lady) who will size you up and decide if you're basement, first floor or VIP material. A lot depends on how busy they are but dress to impress if you want to sit in the box seats.

The girls in VIP are by and large more attractive and better pole dancers so if you've just come to look it's the best place to be. However the girls are also often wholly professional and so obviously plastic that the process can be utterly joyless.

Personally I prefer the mixed bag of the lower floors. Granted you may see some real 5/6's but you will also see some quirky girls with real personality who are likely to prove far more entertaining.

Procedures:

Having been taken to your appropriate level you'll be introduced to your floor manager. These guys speak varying degrees of English and, as with everything, if you want good service, tip them. A crisp note as you shake hands is always appreciated and may get you a better table or indeed the girl you want.

The girls rotate (in every sense) and there will usually be three girls in front of you at any one time. On the last song / dance of their session each girl takes her top off but the knickers stay firmly on apart from when things get really frantic in the VIP lounge when I'm told one girl will dance naked. During the second dance she will be completely naked. You are allowed indeed encouraged to touch during these sessions but not her lower parts. The process last no longer than 5 minutes.

You can also ask a girl (via the floor manager or waitress) to come and sit with you, which will cost you a cocktail (150 hryvnia) and allow you to have a chat. Touching but not groping is usually allowed on these occasions.

Take out:

One of the great attractions of Rio and indeed other strip bars is that you can often take a girl home if you're prepared to pay the $300 fee. Private dances and chats over cocktails are often viewed as a precursor to such a purchase.

I shall recount my own personal experiences later but take out can be a complete disappointment or a lead on to better things.

First off none of the girls are likely to do anything other than classic sex and covered BBJ. It seems to be in their contracts and is a rule that will never be broken on a first occasion. Some girls will not even let you go down on them and will try to get the whole process over within an hour. This is not good value even when compared with a night club or Gia (the escort agency).

Lots of these places you mention is just restaurant and cafés.
