Having spent a long weekend in Kiev, I thought I would post an update covering some of the strip clubs I visited. To start with Easter is not a good time to be in Kiev, many of the clubs were closed on Saturday and Sunday, but not Good Friday for whatever reason. I am not sure if this is something specific to this year because business is relatively quieter than usual or an annual occurrence.

In any case it did severely restrict the choice of places to go, on the other hand as a result I visited some of the clubs that I would have otherwise not visited.

To start with any concern I had about safety were unfounded, Maiden Square is still closed but having walked through the area on a number of occasions, I did not feel threatened, everyone was particularly friendly and welcoming. What I did find strange was that some places were selling souvenirs, not the usual type one would expect from a tourist destination but pieces of ordinance, bullet shells, hard hats and other bits connected to the fight that occurred during the Maiden occupation.

McDonalds that was used as a makeshift hospital is back to selling burgers, and apart from the odd burnt down car, the places is returning to normality. What hasn't are the clubs, many were pretty empty and I was told by some of the girls that they went for weeks not seeing more than the odd customer which barely covered their cost to get to work.

On Friday all clubs were open and it was business as usual, I thought I would give Dolls a go, and was pleasantly pleased to find out that their prices in Hryvna have not changed from last year irrespective of the fact that the exchange rate is now around 11 hryvna to the dollar. I am no expert in strip clubs in Kiev and do not purport to have extensively visited many, but I think Rio, Dolls and Manadarin are the better of the lot, not least because you are nor pressured to hand out cash all the time, they do not over inflate the girls drinks and provide a relaxed environment to spend an evening.

Dolls advertise their prices on their website, what is not shown is the take out price, which currently is 2, 700 Hryvna or around $270 for 2 hours, which because of the exchange rate, is now more competitive than it used to be. For 5, 000 one can take the girl for the whole of the night, or rather until 6am which is not the same, but if you pick up someone at 2100 that gives you more than enough time for a full GFE. It is also a lot cheaper than any escort agency would charge for an all nighter.

Saturday night proved more challenging, having been told by the girl I took home from Dolls that all clubs will be closed over the weekend, I was wondering what to do for the next few days, having tried Mamba before, I can't say I have been that lucky, of course there are lots of girls, but there are also lots of photos that are not of the girls, especially of the ones that are selling sex. With a little pressure I have frequently been able to get the girls to send their real photos, they normally say that they look similar to the photos on the site, but this is just their opinion, I have still to find someone that is as attractive as the photos on the site. Since I decided not to use Mamba, I thought I would check Rio in case I was misled that all clubs were closed, unfortunately, it was, lights off and not a person in sight, so I thought I would make my way to Arena complex and see what is happening there, my 1st stop was Solid Gold which was open, except at the time there was just one other customer, and some 10 or 15 girls, there were a couple of 6 or 7 but the rest would barely pass the 5 mark, however within an hour of arriving, we were told the club was to close for technical reasons, and were given 30 minutes notice to leave, I am not sure what the technical reasons could be, whether the owners decided it was too quite to leave the place open or the police where on their way, I don't know, however I was assured that it would be business as usual the next day.

Of interest is that Solid Gold do have take out, $300 for 3 hours which is the same as Rio, their drinks prices are around double of those of other prices, so a Vodka sets you back about 70 Hryna which is on the high end, and the girls are very much into champagne which can cost 1,000 or above.

Things weren't going as well as I had hoped, the only club that I found open, did not stay open for long so I thought I would check Golden Rhino, also within the Arena complex, when I arrived I was one of 3 customers, with about 5 girls dancing, one of the girl had a particularly great figure so when the special offer for a private dance came up, price reduced by half from 400 hryvna to 200 hryvna I thought I would take up the offer.

Within an hour or two of my arrival, the place got somewhat much busier, and having 5 girls shared between some 15 customers was not ideal, because one could barely talk to any as they were either dancing or in a private dance. One of the girls told me that they had not expected so many visitors, so the management had only asked for 5 of the girls to go to work. I would guess as was my case, with Solid Gold being closed, everyone was instead coming to the Golden Rhino.

If it was not for the fact that all the good clubs were closed, Solid gold is not a place I would visit again, for a start anything you buy for the girls are inflated to double or triple the normal price, so a glass of fresh juice sets you back about 200 hryna or $20, and before I knew it, I had spent 1, 000 hryna on drinks.

Solid gold does not allow take out, I stayed at the place until it closed, for no other reason than that my options were pretty limited, and the 5 girls that were there when I arrived were also there at 5am, so I do not think they make any exceptions, I guess one could ask the girl to join them after the clubs closes at 6am, but there is a good chance that she will fall asleep before you end the first session.

On Sunday I thought I would give Penthouse a go, I had been there about a year ago only for a short time so I thought I would give the place a try before going to Solid Gold, Penthouse is a small place, on arrival you are met by this little man who runs the lift, which in fact is not a lift at all, just shakes to make you believe that you are going up some 70 floors, or that what the level display says!

On arrival there was no one else and some 10 girls dancing, most were below 5 but a couple stood out, and since there was little competition I got talking to one of the girls who I eventually took out. Penthouse has a crazy menu and it includes the take out price of 2, 700 hryvna for 3 hours, they also have a room you can rent but if memory serves me correct, the price was 2,400 for 40 minutes, which is not such a good deal, although convenient.

Given the choice I would not visit Solid Gold, Penthouse or Golden Rhino again, it was only out of desperation, the standard of girls was OK, but that was not the real issue, it's the fact that the girls are pushy, and continuously try to up-sell themselves, which can become very annoying.

I think and I stand to be corrected here, places like Rio do pay the girls a salary, maybe not much but enough not to feel the need to sell themselves all the time, or they go home worst off than when they arrived. So it is very understandable where bar owners do not pay the girls at all, that the girls have no other choice to but try to make some money before the end of the day.

I think this is sheer exploitation, both from the girls and customers' point of view, the only person that benefits here are the owners, because if business is quite, their overheads are negligible. For this reason I will never visit any of these clubs again partly out of principle but as importantly, I do not want to continuously be pestered by every girl on the floor, many of which I have no interest in, or to pay a premium for a girls drink. I have no problem paying the girls a fair price, but being ripped of is not my idea of spending a good evening.

Monday things go back to normal, I understand the clubs will again be open tonight, and although it is great to visit these places with practically no competition from other punters, the fact is that if these places loose lots of customers, they will eventually close which is of no benefit to anyone.
