Partner if you want to come to Kiev then come. I am here now and the people are as nice as they have always been. Maybe even more so. I was walking with my woman up and down Kreshatik all day with no problems. There are tire barricades and stacks of bricks pulled from the sidewalks ready to be thrown if needed. I have some minor experience about perfumes for dyevs. If you choose the lighter perfumes you can't go wrong.

I use to buy "D&G Light Blue","Versace Bright Crystal","Versace Yellow Diamond","Jean-Paul Gaultier Woman X","Paco Rabanne Million Dollar Lady". The most popular has been D&G, Versace and J-P Gaultier.

Stay away from the "heavy"perfumes, because the dyevs prefers the light and fresh ones. Some manufactures make some special summer-perfumes that is quite good and popular.

If you are in doubt and don't know anything about it, you must ask the people working in the perfume-section in the duty-free store. They know everything about this and knows what is popular or not.

Perfumes in Ukraine is out agedly overpriced. On my last visit to Odessa / Nikolaev in September I checked the prices in stores and it was 1200UAH for 100ml. Of perfume. The price on the duty-free was more then half of that. The prices may have changed during the last six months.

I was in Kiev about 3 weeks ago, and all the Maidan area is open. Barricades are there but you can walk freely, Mc Donalds Kreshatik is open, not many places were closed. I had some drinks at Coffee Time but Budha Bar was closed on a Saturday night. I cannot say if there are girls looking for customers as I don't go there looking for action.

I was in and around Maidan Friday for a while and I can tell you the majority of the barricades are still there but the atmosphere is quite relaxed, especially compared to last February. Other than some very strange characters wandering about, not much was happening. To be honest, I'm not even sure the McDonalds has reopened, although I would wager it probably has. I will be down there this week and if so I will check it out.

Regardless, I was at the Shuliavska metro station yesterday evening waiting for a friend of mine to go to dinner and you should've seen all the lovely university students heading down to take the metro. Tons of them in tight jeans and heels (still too cold for short skirts) heading towards the center.

In my opinion anf after compare prices with the shopping malls in Kiev most of the products in the Kiev duty freee are more expensive eg parfumes smokes cosmetics etc. Even the local or Russian vodka. Therefore I suggest shopping in Kiev city

As usual, Uke Boy is offering some useful advice. If you are coming to Kyiv you should bring as much Western currency as possible. The economic (not to mention the political) situation here is in dramatic flux. No telling what will happen tomorrow let alone next week.

About currency exchange rates, they might be at 1 USD for 11. 60 UAH on the internet, but not on the streets of Kyiv. I was on and around Kreshchatyk all afternoon today. The highest I saw was 1 USD for 11. 25 UAH (private exchange booths) while the lowest was an inexplicable 1 USD for 10. 90 UAH (banks). I find the exchange rate here is often sluggish to keep up with the rates posted on internet sites. I've also read reports on the internet by Ukrainian economists that the UAH with hover around 10 UAH to the dollar this year. It has already jumped from 8 to 10 and then quickly back to 9 in late February / early March. Who really know how far the UAH will drop before it rises again.

As for ATM's, there was a run on withdrawing UAH in mid to late February during the height of the fighting which forced banks to place withdrawal restrictions on customers. However, that does not seem to be the case in Kyiv now. I withdrew 6000 UAH just an hour ago with no problem. I watched the man ahead of me withdraw around 2000 UAH with no difficulty. This was done at a very busy 'Agricola' bank at the base of my apartment outside of the city center. This is just my experiences in Kyiv, for what it is worth.
