Form Arena to RP a cab ride should be about 20 GRV, and it can be 40, 80, or even 100, depending on how stupid you look or are. The ride back, with a girl, should be about 40, or up to 200 depending on how stupid you are or look.

On the way there do not ask those cabs standing there outside arena, just go to the street and flag any car, and make an offer. Try 20 a free times, then move up to 30 and someone will soon agree.

On the way back, do not go for the ones waiting outside rp, just walk 10-20 metres to the cabs just coming in or still at the road. They are more likely to agree to something reasonable.

Make sure you understand each other. Once I clearly agreed for a ride for 30 and once I got there the guy wanted 60. He played it well, even saying that he would rather drive me back than accept 30. I almost agreed, but then figure he could drive me anywhere, maybe to the mafia, so I just got out and quickly walked into RP

I notice RP's address is at the intersection of Brovarskoy avenue and Naberezhne shosse and most of the rentals are close to Khreschatyk Str. Can someone suggest an apartment within walking distance of RP or is that unrealistic?

Unless you want to sleep rough on a steep cliff side or along the highway that is at the bottom of the cliff or on the river itself, get something in the center of town and take taxis to and from RP. There is nothing but nothing in terms of living facilities at RP or even near RP.

RP is located about 50 meters or so from the Dnipro Metro station. You can go from Khreshchtik to RP by metro if you go before midnight when the trains stop and then taxi home from there paying "premium" taxi rates when you head back with your night's entertainment.

So get this, I leave my apartment in Dubai and head to the airport in a thunderstorm, with it pissing down with rain. I arrive in kyiv for a few days work and a few days play and the sun hasn't stopped shining.

I never met somebody who speak french there.

Few people speak english, really less than in Prague.

Remember the same alphabet is different... so problem to read metro station.

It is possible to spend time in Kiev without russian knowledge, and it is a nice trip.
Ukrainian is not use in Kiev according to me (a girl made a check in the street for me).

During soviet times french language was learned in schools.

This was back in seventies and I meet pleanty of people who spoke french in Russia and Ukraine but this are people in their fifties now.

There are french high schools in Russia (Allianze Francaize, I scored with few female teachers from France and Belgium he he).

But I don't know if they exist in Ukraine thus producing some girls in their twenties who speak french.

As we talked here russian knowledge will help in Ukraine but if you don't speak it you will be limited on those who speak english (if we talk about p4p)

and be in possible danger of various scams.

As for freebies without russian one will not go far.

Ukrainian language is used in Kiev but much less than russian.

Less than 30% speak ukraininan in Kiev but this is mainly at home.

I know a taxi driver who worked in Kiev and he told me that in 30 years he had only 4 customers who addressed him in ukrainian language and they all were from Lvov.

Disillusioned since 2004 with the state of the hobby at my favorite playground (Baltics) , I am seriously tempted to make my maiden voyage to Kiev later on this year. Given my limited knowledge of the Russian language (maybe 10 words!) and my relatively advanced age (46) and my limited budget, I suspect my options are mainly limited to paying frequent visits to the mecca a la Kiev (River Palace). I notice there are many apartment rental companies on the internet and many have been commented on here on this board. I think there is general agreement that there is no clear leader among these rental agencies in terms of service and price. That leaves me with the task of finding an apartment close to the palace. I agree with Kurenda.

If you like clubs try Kiev Fall-Winter-Spring or Odessa in the summer.

Crimea also a good summer option.

Be forewarned that the Odessan pro scene (if you are into pros) is remarkably undeveloped and it takes some work to find them if you aren't used to EE. There is a ton written on Odessa if you RTFF and AFAIK it is mostly still true.

Overall Kiev offers much more though. Odessa is quite provincial, the only real benefit being the beach clubs June-September.
