If you're a Canadian and considering a visit to Kiev but you're dreading having to buy American dollars from your local bank to take with you, have no fear. Plenty of places in the Center take Canadian currency. Not only in the Center as I saw just last week a few booths in Shuliavska offering to buy CAD. I was once told by a contact in Kiev it's better to bring USD as few places will exchange Canadian but this is completely false.

Partner Guesthouse has quite a lot of apartments in Basseina st. Reasonable prices for ST rent. Try the Georgian food in Khinkali on Shota Rustaveli 4, next to Oscar. The Georgian house red wine was surprisingly good. They claimed it is home made. I did not ask in what home it was made. Good hookah in a rather simple cafe just next door. Both places has outdoor serving in the summer.

I think Basseina is convenient, but Podil is nicer as FiddyCent suggested. Expect heavy traffic to / from Podil at certain times. This will mean delays for girls traveling to meet you. A friend told me the tram could be a shortcut to get over the hill if the traffic is congested.

There are other areas that one could consider for an apartment. Cheaper ones. It boils down to budget and the objective of your trip.

And yes, Kiev is a safe city relative to many other European cities. Try walking in something similar to the undergrounds of Kiev in any of the western European cities and see how long you will be left alone. Despite the corruption there is still a sense of law and order in many parts of Kiev. I have even noticed that storekeepers can actually leave parts of the display outside the stores in the underground during night, without having it vandalized. Impossible in our "liberal, loving and understanding" parts of west Europe. Kiev is a great city!

This is ofcause true. But compared to most american cities it is still safe. I have surely been around Kiev. Been there 15 times. And around a lot of the other major cities too. Just act normal and all will be good.

I have stayed in both the Podil area and in the center. If you want convenience and be close to all the nightlife, then stay near the center. Kiev is safe for Americans, but it does help to learn some basic Russian and Ukrainian. If you would like a contact in Kiev, then send me a PM.
