My thinking about Rio always was based on the lower cost there of $100 / hr, as compared to the high priced girls in D'lux and Buddha Bar and the like, who I never succeeded in negotiating to lower than $300/2 hours, and some of the extremely beautiful stunners stuck at $400/2 hours, which is a rate of $200 / hr. So Rio was a better rate than that nightclub situation. So IMHO, if you've given up on Rio because of crowding and seating issues, and you don't like Mandarin for whatever other reason, and you are prepared to pay over $300/2 hours at Dolls, then you should really be thinking about the top nightclub scene where you are not limited to a few girls in a rather small line up, and the negotiated prices are not really higher than what you would pay in Dolls, and there also exists the possibility of lower prices with some of the girls. And at some of the second tier nightclubs / bars it is possible to get even lower prices of $200/2hours and less.

So unless you particularly like the strip club environment versus the nightclub environment, at the price level you are at when you go to Dolls, you can also consider going to D'lux as well, for similar prices.

What came as a surprise was the new year show at the stroke of midnight, Santa Clause turned up joined by 4 scantly dressed girls who stripped to their knickers to the tune of jingle bells. This was followed by several more shows whilst champagne glasses were being handed to the guest at no charge.

When Rio is not busy, and if you manage to get into the VIP rooms, you are much closer to the girls, but the overall experience at Dolls is a million times better, the only other club I have been to is Penthouse apart from Rio which is just up the road, but it is nowhere as good, however if none of the girls pick your fancy at Dolls, Penthouse is only 5 minutes walk across the road or if that doesn't work for you Rio is a further 20 minutes walk if you fell like a nice stroll in the middle of the night.

One final thing, which is not really the case at Rio, the girls use the clubs taxis which charge 100 hrivna even if you are 700m away from the club which is a bit of a rip off when you can pick up a taxi for 50 or less for a short journey.

I think considering the much higher standard of venue, music and show element, paying 100 hrivna more than Rio is fair, a private dance at 400 hrivna is a rip off, and they should extend the girls' stay to 3 hours from the current 2, if they did that I see no reason for anyone to go to Rio.

Others might differ but I think Dolls is the best club of the 3, I guess I am being somewhat biased as I did not expect to walk out with a free bottle of bubbly, my experience of these places is that they take every penny they can lay their hands on and rarely get anything for free.

If shows and spacious decor are things that make a difference for you, then you should check out Mandarin. The Mandarin club is a sister club to Rio, and the line up of dancers is on a rotation with Rio, so girls alternate dancing at Rio some nights and at Mandarin other nights. Also the take out prices are similar to Rio, which means 3 hours for $300 is also available at Mandarin. And the song and dance show is entertaining.

During my last visit to Kiev in October, the downstairs bar area at Rio was closed. They had one line up of girls dancing in the upstairs inner room and upstairs outer room, both of which allow you to have a girl comfortably seated next to you to chat. There is also a small bar area just across from the couches in the upstairs outer room, where customers can have a drink while waiting for a table to open up, and that's probably where you felt crowded. It sounds like the downstairs might still be closed, if you experienced crowding when you went to Rio. By the way, there is no magic to being seated in the VIP lounge, which has a separate line up of dancers. It only requires a good rapport with the manager on the floor, which traditionally has been created by giving 100 UAH tips to the manager who assisted you on any particular evening, and being friendly. That has always sufficed to make one a good enough VIP to be seated in the VIP lounge when there is room there. Of course, if the place is full when you arrive, even erstwhile VIP's are seated in the crowded bar area until a table opens up.

I too liked the decor and set up at Dolls when I visited that club just after it had opened. My feelings were that there were too few girls in their line up for such a nice, big club. I would be interested to know if the line up at Dolls ever was bigger than 20 girls, and what percentage of the line up was good looking, as all these places have some girls who are too plain for consideration. And also do all girls at Dolls go out with customers, or only some of the girls.

My reason for not returning to Dolls after my first visit there, was the small number of girls in the line up, and the prices which were higher than Rio. But Rio never had an erotic massage room. Dolls' erotic massage room option is interesting. Of importance, please explain. Does the erotic massage for 500 UAH at Dolls, include the "happy ending"? You didn't say in your report. And if so, what about being able to touch and / or kiss the girl in various parts of her body, including breasts and / or pussy? Can oral sex (BJ or DATY) happen in the erotic massage room? Or is it possible to go all the way, and have full service? Just how "erotic" can it get in the erotic massage room at Dolls?

Another question regarding Dolls, regarding the all night take out option for $500, please clarify what hours are potentially included. You mentioned 6:00 AM as the Dolls club's closing time, when your date had to end. Beginning from what time is it possible to take a girl out from Dolls for an all night take out for $500? Is it possible to begin an all night take out date from shortly after Dolls' 8:00 PM opening time?

If so, here is one area where Dolls may end up with the lower price, because some of the girls at Rio have taken to asking for $500 for all night, when the take out date begins before 12 midnight. They claim that it's $400 for all night take out only when the date begins after midnight. For those girls at Rio asking $500 for an all night take out date, the date ends at 5:00 AM, when Rio closes. However, at Dolls, for the same $500, the date ends an hour later, at 6:00 AM. It's a slight advantage, and if you didn't get what you wanted from the girl by 5:00 AM, it isn't likely the extra hour will make a difference.

But with those Rio girls who do all night take out for $400, Rio has the lower prices in all categories.

Since I'm sure you have no objections to lower prices, and larger line ups of girls to choose from, if you try Rio again, you would probably do well to get there earlier (by 9:00 PM) to beat the "crowds", and to tip your manager the 100 UAH and say hello with a big smile, and chat a little, and ask that you'd like to sit in the VIP lounge. But if you don't want to try those things, and you want better decor and spaciousness, you can continue to have the lower rates, if you try out the Mandarin club (http://mandarin-restaurant.kiev.ua) on Moskovski Prospekt 32.

I'm living and working here in Kyiv now and I agree with what Ross123 posted about the situation at Maiden. Its completely safe to hangout / walk around that area. I'm down there almost daily and sometimes even in a suit and nothing even remotely unusual or unsafe has happened to me. You should not feel threatened. If you are considering coming here rent a flat near Golden Gate, its a relatively calm area and still in the heart of the center. If that idea does not appeal to you, just rent a flat near a metro line and you can zip to the center in no time at all. I live at the end of the red line and I still can reach Kreschatyk in 30 minutes flat.

But just to have the information in one spot concerning this venue, including the "take out" information that is no doubt of interest to readers of this thread, here is the info from the report I filed after visiting Dolls last year, bars upon the printed "Krazy Menu" that the club was using at the time to list the prices of various types of entertainments with the girls.

Its a good idea to have the phone number of your embassy for cases like this, if they waste too much of your time get your cell phone and tell them you have to call your embassy.

I always have my passport with me but I read its better to have a copy of your passport instead of your passport because they may take it and then you have to pay to get it back, don't know if its true

The guys wanted to see the visa stamp not just the passport, so a copy is not much use. I guess one could copy the visa stamp but they could still argue that they want to see the original. Under Ukrainian law, everyone is obliged to carry identification and foreigners are expected to carry their passport.

To be fair in the 15 years I have been travelling in Eastern Europe this was the first time I was ever stopped, and I do have a habit of walking long distances on my own, sometimes in the middle of the night, and no one has ever bothered me, so I was very surprised when this incident happened, but it must have been one of those things.

Yet I met a German guy that walked home from Vodka Bar twice a week and never was stopped mainly because he looked like a local is my guess. If you look like a foreigner expected to stopped late at night around the center. To avoid the hassle take taxi where ever possible, I know many girls insist on a cab if you take them from Vodka Bar as they know the situation too.

When you make the walk down K street from Maiden late night, be sure to walk on the McDonalds side. Many more eyes.

If you look like a foreigner expected to stopped late at night around the center. To avoid the hassle take taxi where ever possible, I know many girls insist on a cab if you take them from Vodka Bar as they know the situation too.

Its a good idea to have the phone number of your embassy for cases like this, if they waste too much of your time get your cell phone and tell them you have to call your embassy.

I was also stopped by two policeman during the day some months ago, they wanted to see my passport which I had forgotten in my apartment, they then proceeded to search my jacket pocket. I had a small packet of mints and they insisted they were drugs. Then they offered me the choice of paying $20 or go to the station and be arrested even though I offered to go to my apartment and get my passport which was 5 minutes away.

By this stage I was starting to lose my patience with them, so I told them that I would rather be arrested than pay a bribe, as they were the ones breaking the law, I was certainly not in the country illegally and although I appreciate that I should carry my passport, it was an honest mistake.

All this was happening in the middle of Maiden square, a number of passer by stopped and started arguing with the police in Russian, so could not understand much but whatever they did tell the police, they decided to make a fast exit.

I was lucky that I was in the middle of a very central location and some good Samaritans stopped to help, furthermore the two policemen were much shorter than me which did help a bit. I really do not advice anyone to take the same course especially if it is your first time to Ukraine. I have travelled a lot in Eastern Europe and was reasonably confident that I could stand my ground, but if the circumstances were different I may well have reacted differently and taken the easy route paid and parted with some dollars.

However, hopefully these two policeman whoever they were will be more careful next time they approach a tourist and do the right thing, try to help tourist visiting their beautiful country to have a great experience and not abuse their position.

A police car on Bessarabska was parked in the triangle and 30 protesters arrived so the police man ran in to the car. They did a nice paint job on the car.
