I first heard of it in 2009 when I chick I kinda dated got a job at one of these "brides offices" where she was getting paid for talking to naive Americans who were searching for real life and feelings in Ukraine.

How all this works:

1) They create a kind of dating site / service where they have profiles of super nice women / girls from Ukraine. Most of them are fake.

2) As a man you have to register to the site but chatting with a girl is not free of charge. 1 message is 1 dollar, when you want a picture, you pay more, when you want to come to Ukraine, you need to hire a "translator" cause your Ukrainian "bride" doesn't speak good English. When you hire the "translator" and come to Ukraine, they will try to rip you off by taking to expensive places, asking for presents for a poor Mon. / dad / brother of your "Ukrainian bride".

3) In some cases it may lead to that BBC article about Odessa.

The amount of such "offices" where they scam Americans is huge. They are almost in all big Ukrainian city and top 3 are Kyiv, Dnipro and Zaporizhya.

If you are really seeking for feelings, them learn from Russian and come to Kyiv anc try to find a wife yourself (if you really want a Ukrainian wife that bad).

If you just want good sex with a hot Slavic chick, then use OMG bot (if you are looking for AAA level), stripclub is you are ok with AA level or site like keksik or any other if you are on a tight budget or just not really picky.

There are averages. There are super expensive outliers at Ibiza for those that can afford and consider it worthwhile.

I read about the place they took me on tripadvisor, after the fact. This is a very typical scam they seem to run there. Some of the people on tripadvisor said that they brought in the police. Now, whether it is a real cop who is in on it or just some other guy with a badge, it would be impossible to say. However, if it were a corrupt cop, I would say the best thing to do would be to insist on being arrested. They won't beat the shit out of you if you are from western Europe or north America. I have been working in Ukraine as a photojournalist since the war began and I've had a lot of interactions with the police. Wether getting hassled for covering protests or for my own antics like drink driving and fighting, and I would really be shocked if they laid a finger on a westerner. Also, by Ukrainian law, as I understand it, they have to get you a translator. Maybe somebody can confirm this?? I have insisted on this in the past and after some back and forth was let go (for drunk and disorderly type thing) . Anyway, it is a good stall tactic and would get you out of immediate danger. Of course, if it is just a goon with a fake badge, they can easily break your face. As for balls. Maybe) also, just the right amount of amphetamines and alcohol to have a low aversion to risk and make bad, but at least decisive, decisions.

Actually this question of translator should be looked into. We should know our rights with the police.

I once moved a Young Traffic PoliceGuy with an Ak47 with my 2 hands away from the front of my car because he was beeing stupied and I told him several times to move, it was a traffic stop just to get money out of me.

Very similar thing was attempted on me.

On the table is a bottle of johny walker blue, cola, ice, hooka, cheese and meat plate, etc. And of course the charade continues. I poured a large glass of whiskey. Maybe 1/3 the bottle and watched my glass close as possible. In the meantime this chick is jerking me under the table but also trying not to do too much. I excused myself to the bathroom and called an uber (I brought my drink with me) and then when I came back to the table, I could see that my uber was outside. I texted the driver and said I will be out in 2 minutes. I ordered a bunch of shots for us and for next table. Drank my shot, said I wanted to grab a cigarette and walked outside. It was clear security was watching closely so as soon as I was maybe clear of the door, I took off, jumped in the cab and said to go. This dummy was texting me for next 24 hours saying she had to pay the bill and she will find me, blah blah. I am not sure how the scam works. I assume they get a percentage of the inflated bill. But not sure if they had to pay after I stiffed them. But, I do hope so.

This was definitely a 1 time adventure and I don't recommend trying this at all. I understand it could have ended badly. But I have to say, they tried to fuck me and they got good and fucked instead!
