A madam running a busy brothel in Cardiff turned over more than £100,000 in nine months before the premises were raided by the police.

Nadia Plesuvu recruited new prostitutes, organised advertising, negotiated prices with clients, managed the women's time, kept a record of their earnings, and controlled the finances.

Newport Crown Court heard she sent a message to one sex worker saying: "I'll haggle with him on price. I told him £150 per hour."

Matthew Cobbe, prosecuting, said police searched flats in Richmond Road in Roath at 10 am on August 6 last year. The defendant was renting a two-bedroom ground-floor flat, with a living room converted into a third bedroom.

Officers seized mobile phones, notebooks, diaries and "sex-related paraphernalia". Mr Cobbe said: "Analysis revealed just how busy this brothel was."

Analysis of the items revealed the defendant had spent more than £8,000 advertising on a website called Vivastreet. The court heard she advertised by posting photographs of the prostitutes on "adult websites" using pseudonyms.

In the notebooks Plesuvu kept a daily record of how long each sex worker spent with clients, how much they charged, and their expenses.

Mr Cobbe read out a WhatsApp conversation in which one of the prostitutes asked: "How long have I got left with this guy?" Plesuvu replied: "15 minutes".

She told one client it would cost £140 for an hour with one woman, or £240 for two women, or £900 for the whole night with one woman.

The defendant instructed a prostitute: "When it's not the correct money you should always ring me. Always count the money properly in front of him."

Residents, Councillors and police expressed the need for a new strategy to deal with sex workers in Grangetown.

Prostitution along the Taf Embankment was one of the issues brought up by residents at the latest Grangetown PACT meeting this week.

The current strategy is a five stage plan, where prostitutes are given a number of warnings before any arrest can be made.

This system is designed more to help women off of the streets rather than criminalising them by engaging them with support groups such as Street Life.

As it currently stands, each time the police catch a woman soliciting they are given a warning and if they are caught again within three months they are moved on to the next stage in the five step process.
