Okay, so how exactly did the conversation go? Did he indicate that you were going to have to pay a fee to leave the customs area? Did he suggest something more sinister, like you were going to have a "problem" if you didn't give him some money? Did he find something in your bag that he suggested was illegal in The Gambia but would be okay to have if you paid him a fee? I'm not trying to be nosey or all up in your business. I'm just trying to get more information on what happened since I don't use ATMs in foreign nations (or even in the United States, for that matter) and don't want or need a customs agent in The Gambia getting dollar signs in his eyes if he discovers a stack of Benjamins in my carry-on luggage.

It was a very polite and friendly shake down. Laughing at the sheer quantity of condoms etc. Honestly, if I'd had nothing in my bag but clothes I think I still would have got a shake down. I was a bit suspect on the legalities of some of the stuff. Mainly my vaping liquid (I don't think it's legal here.).

He put it more as a request for a tip, "Do you have something for me? We don't get paid very much. Don't be obvious, just put it in your passport and hand it to me. " I only had 20 dollars loose, so that's what I gave him.

Didn't feel threatened and I'm sure some of the old Africa hands would have just told him to fuck off and it would have been fine.

Bags xrayed on the way out. Pulled aside by customs to go through my back. Headed over to Time Inn at about 8 pm. Farrrrrrrrrrrr too early. (I knew this, but I was just too exhausted to contemplate heading there at 11.) Most ATMs in Africa allow more than 1 cash withdrawel per day. I used the ATM at GTbank on the crossroad of Senegambia Rd and Bertil Harding Hwy cashed 3 or 4 times on each occasion. Never had to go to another ATM.

Just writing this to kill a bit of time before I hit Time Inn. I'm exhausted, so I'm just going to pray there's something halfway decent there at 7/8 pm for a quickie!

Ended up only getting about four hours sleep, then headed out to pick up supplies and breakfast. Everywhere I went, lots of interest from girls. Smiles and conversations. Turns out my hotel isn't girlfriendly. They want 1000 dalasi for a girl, but I'm moving tomorrow. I'll swallow it tonight.

There is a bank counter on left hand side as you enter the reception where you can draw larger amounts of cash up to your card limits in one go ATMs in the tourist areas are worst rip off as they allow you only a very limited amount and on top of that they charge 200 dal fees.

Just a quick report. Made it through the flight with no major hiccups. Entry process was straight forward. Asi came from the UK, an additional lateral flow test at Banjul Airport. Results in 5 minutes.

Paid an 'official bribe' at the border. Airport development fee - 20 dollars, 20 pounds or 20 euros. Well, as I've got all three, that'll be dollars then.

As I was expecting, my hotel never arranged the transfer I requested. Couldn't find any of the green or yellow official taxis, so I jumped into a 30 year old Mercedes on the basis that the driver was an ancient, skinny guy who I might have a chance with in a fight.

First time in Africa, so a little interesting / heart beating when you're not 100 percent you're not being taken off into the Bush to be robbed.

Lots of police checkpoints on the way to the Sennegambia strip. No more bribes required.

Drove past some clubs, time Inn, britannia, all heaving at 2:30 am on a Thursday morning.

Exhausted, a little culture shocked, no key for the safe in my room (I'm promised it in the morning), no local currency. And in lying here with a bone, trying to resist going out and grabbing the first dusky skinned nubile beauty I see.

I'll resist. I'm going to be here longer than I was in Thailand I think. Try and avoid the burnout I was feeling towards the end.

If you walk down to the beach from the strip and turn right towards Poco loco there's a juice bar set up on a sand hill. Around here there was a girl called Mariama, really pretty girl with big boobs offering massage in the huts at the back, just a happy ending on offer although I tried for more. She did message me asking me out one night but I was already occupied.

Down passed Poco loco there another beach bar with some stalls, another massage is just next to the stalls, she was nice too.
