-the sévaré motel in sévaré : no sw around , and the byblos night club near is not for professionnals as in bamako; however, heard there are only 4 bars for locals with ladies. went in one with the help of a local about 400 m inside the darkness opposite the motel; saw 3 massive looking ladies in that open air bar sitting in the dark, not my taste at all ( i like them petite and active). as they did not move, i made no effort either.
-ségou hotel de france : no ladies on premises since february 2007. the door man said they rep001ered in bars around. i only saw one near joliba hotel , there was a lady waiting next door illuminated by a small red light. again nothing tempting.
-taxi driver said bamko byblos is still working with wh**** (i was there on a monday too soon and only those hassler ripp off so called guide men where available as everywhere in mali).
my best piece of advice for that country : don't go for that, if you do, take a reliable guide whatever you do or buy, he shall protect you from constant troubles with others malian men who don't admit to see a lonesome toubab (white man).

I went on-line and found some very inexpensive plane tickets via Air France (i.e. under $900s). Additionally, the Mali Embassy in D.C. is charging $100s for a multi-entry Visa (worth 5 years for Americans).

Question #1: Do you have a good point-of-contact for renting a house or apartment (w/ security)? Currently, the Mali government requires Hotel Reservations w/ the VISA application.

Question #2: Do the cheaper Hotels in Mali provide some type of security? I've read several travel blogs which indicate crime is on the increase in the capital city.

Greetings, I am new and have to say I am amazed at the lack of Malian reports as well as the lame reports on Africa. Many of the posting providers seem to be just out for a fuck, which is fine, many of us are. But try and treat women with a little respect. Young ladies aren't out there waiting for you to abuse them (you don't have to hit someone to be abusive). I agree, sometimes African girls can be exhausting. Put yourself in their economic and educational shoes for a moment. Would you let some sweaty guy roll on top of you for $5? Yes, the affordability and availability of African ladies is very enticing, but at least treat them with a little respect. It is how we all learn to respect ouselves, and they need that also. Also remember, you are a guest in their country. Act accordingly. Most Malians want you to enjoy yourself, and often are glad to see their daughters with foreigners. Eventually, they may find one to marry them and get them out of the poverty they are in. And yes, it does happen, often.

Having lived in Mali for the past 8 years I believe I am qualified to speak on the subject.

The Byblos is not owned by the mafia. I know many Lebanese and have chatted with the owners, who are friends of a colleague. Be careful how you label people. It's the mature thing to do. Most Lebanese in Mali are Christians looking for a different life. 4 million Lebanese in Lebanon, 15 million out of the country. (Just think what the world would look like if the Chinese and Hindus proportioned themselves in the same way). Also, in eight years of chasing skirts I have yet to meet one woman in Bamako that is working for some "pimp" or other mangerial type. Now, if you are into little girls, yes, they often are being manipulated by someone. Stay away from the girls anyway you dirty old men. There are plenty of 20's out there ready and willing.

Taxis-Never pay more than 1500 CFA unless you are going on a wayyyyyyyy long ride. Two of the furthest points in town (Faladie to Titibougou is only) 2000 CFA

Bank Machines - The BICIM has two branches with VISA machines. Easy, safe, and reliable.

Brothels - Few, but stay away. These are the dirt cheap places with lots of diseases.

Auberge/Chambre de Nuit - These generally have rooms by the hour

Time of year - Dec Jan Feb is best, the height of tourist season. Lots of locals and foreign girls. Stay away from the eastern europeans. Summer can be good als, but it is the rainy season. Many young ladies of 20-24 are still in school so July/August can be a good time to go when school is out.

Hotels - Most young ladies woon't go near a 3 or 4 star hotel. A few, but not many. Sometimes one can find a few poolside during the daytime. Most hotels are open to your guests.

Houses - If you are there for a month rent a house. If you have $1000 to spend get one with a pool. Invite lots of ladies to swim. They will always get naked. Eye candy city.

Motos - GET ONE. It is the easiest form of transport. Sell it when you leave or give it to your favorite girl

Gifts - Take bras and panties with you (Plenty of 34,36 B, C and D). They will love you for it. Buy them a cell phone $50. They will love you more. Bring swimwear to give her (sizes 4-8). Give her 5000 CFA for her work then take her out the next day to buy her some clothes. This gives her status in the eyes of the locals and will keep her looking nice for you too. Buy jewelry locally. Silver is dirt cheap. Gold is very reasonable. Take her to brunch on a Sunday at the Mande, Kempinski, Sofitel, or Salaam. Teach her how to use the cybecafe to stay in touch. You don't have to marry her. But be nice, generous, and thoughtful. You can afford it. And it will garner a lot of respect. The topper is if you go meet her family. She will let you know how, when, or if it is a good idea. This will get you some freebies.

Police - ALWAYS be friendly, jovial, and cooperative. You never know when you may need a friend. Spend $1 and buy them some tea and sugar if they are hassling you.

Aggressive Women - Stay away from them. If they won't leave you alone just walk to the bar and ask the barman to talk to her. Be kind, yet firm.

Restaurants - My favs are Bla Bla, Da Guido, Campagnard, Petit Cafe, Cafe du Fleuve, Suko Thai, Asia Restaurant, and Terrasse. $30 will get you drinks, steak and potatoes, and a small tip.

Music - Lots of clubs with live music. The Hogon is great on Friday nights with Toumani Diabate. Hotel Wassalou on Sat nights with Oumou Sangare. Try the Centre Culturel Francais for concerts.

Night Clubs - Privilege in Badalabougou, Bla Bla in Badalabougou, Star Night, Byblos, Bla Bla, Sky Bar all in Hippodrome, Sofitel Casino

Bars - Ananas in Faladie, Pomme in Baco Djicoroni, MOPE in Faso Kanou (music), Le Bon Coeur in Badalabougou, Hotel Kora, Hotel Relais de Djoliba

Times of Day - Rare to find ldies at bars during the day. Ananas has a few.

Pools This is great for the eye candy crowd. Take her to a pool and just look her up and down. Teacher to swim.

Niger River - Don't swim in it unless you are up river from Bamako. Always wash with a little bleach in the water immediately after.

Villages - Don't even think about it. You'll get yourself in some hot water screwing someone's wife. Stick to the cities.

Malian girls - Almost always excised, many are uniterested in real sex, just there for a few dollars to get their air braided. Many full breasted Malians. I have bought bras for many of my "friends", since they can be hard to come by. I have bought a fair share of 34DD, 34F, 36G, 32E, and yes a 40GG. Men, you should know about women's sizing. It is important to her and should be important to you. Typically young ladies will be thin, a condition of their economic status, and tend to get heavier as they get older, very little recognition of body health. Few drink, many will eat pork even though they are Muslim, few know how to swim. BJs are regular, but not great. Anal is available with maybe 30% of the ladies. Threesomes are rare with Malians. Stick to the foreign girls for that. Check her ID. She must have it with her if she is out at night.

Out of Country girls - It is quite common for young ladies to leave home and travel a little, making some money on the way by taking it from guys like you and me. The Senegalese tend to be pushy, also many Ivoirians. The Sierra Leonese girls are nice, Liberians are often quite unrefined, Caeroonians are quite nice, and full breasted. Ghanaians are take it or leave it for me. Nigerians are always irritating. Guineans are nice, and will often smoka little herb. (Very easy to come by. 25,000 CFA/kg, 5000 CFA will easily last a month for a consistent smoker)

Nice Out of Town Trips - Segou is quaint, with girls available. Mopti and Sikasso are the same. Don't be afraid to approac a local in the daytime. Buy her a soda, talk for a while, invite her out for the evening. If she is with an older woman in the market, maybe an older sister or mother, address the older first. This is still a very traditional country. They will let you know if you are out of bounds. They aren't stupid, they know what you want. Mom may have been in the same situation 20 years ago. *********Try the Donso in Selengue. Take a lady from Bamako with you and just hang out for a couple days. It is very tranquil. A 90 min taxi ride will cost you 25,000. Small transports are available.

Finding available girls in Mali is easy. But we are seeing more girls with money who just go to hang out, dance with friends, and be young. They are not there for fucking. Feel free to talk to most any girl on the street, in a shop, anywhere. She will let you know quickly if she is not interested. If communication is a problem hire a guy friend to take you around for 5000/day. He will be able to hook you up with most anything you need.

Most all bars have girls hanging out. Most are not pro's. Generally the pro's one sees are from other countries. Malian girls just go out to get some money once in a while, with a few exceptions. There are numerous new clubs and bars in Bamako. You can't be a tourist though. You have to try and mingle with the people on their terms at their level. Don't be afraid to dance by yourself and approach ladies on the dance floor. They too will let you know quite quickly if they are not interested. Eye contact from across the room can be helpful. Always invite her back to sit with you. Don't go to her. If she doesn't come with you to your seat she isn't serious about going with you anyway. Most don't want a fancy meal at night. They would rather have the money. Don't try to get her drunk. If she is with you she is a sure thing.

I visited Mali in 2000, 2002 and 2004.

This is my 2004 report:

Labadi is right, things are changing fast these days, but you still can be lucky and get a good pick. In Bamako, I got tired of the clubs like Byblos, which are run by the Lebanese mafia and basically cater for the business community. The girls are great, but many of them too professional in the sense at they try to rip you off (probably under the management of the above mafia). Took 2 of them home to the very girl-friendly Grand Hotel, good sex, but a turndown after it was done - they asked for more and did not stick to our arrangement. Expect 25.000 CFA or more to please these girls!

So I turned to the street to find some freelancers. Found a knowledgable taxidriver and rented him for 30 minutes, including returning home to the hotel. This way, I was free for further haggling, which I don't like with a girl standing next to me. Told him, that I was ready to pay 10.000 CFA for an all-nighter and no more. He was sure to find me a girl for that. We drove along some very ugly neighborhoods, and suddenly - some neat, young and incredibly nice schoolgirls were standing in some doorways. I could not believe my eyes! Not that there were awful many of them, but the quality was definitely outstanding. Found a young fulani girl, 23 years, dressed like a queen and as slim and firm, as these girls can get. A real stunner. My driver arranged the deal - and the whole became one of my best African nights ever. Splendid GFE! Sorry, no phone number. And I even don't remember the exact location.

A good place to find freelancers is Club Akwaba in Hippodrome, there is an open-air dancefloor with Salsa (every night?). In 2004, I met 22-year old Sotema on the dancefloor. Amazing body. Both of us became hot while dancing, and when she left, I followed her to ask her out to my place. I was cautious after my Byblos experience to fix the price, and offered 8.000 CFA. She agreed, and there was no further discussion. Nice GFE! Details on request.

There must be some quality action in Segou, too, but I have not found it yet. There is some dire street action in front of the Hotel du France, but not recommandable.

Mopti tends to be much better, Bar Mali with girls from either Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana or Nigeria being the best option in town. Quality is swinging, though. I was lucky to find an Ivorian girl in 2000 and Patricia from Ghana in 2004, both extremely slim as I like them. I was with a Malian, who arranged the deal for me. Patricia stayed overnight, but sex was mediocre or I was not her type. Ok with me, we are all individuals, but I would not recommend her. The second girl from Ghana seemed to be hotter........ (and in fact was according to my friend....)

Haggling is necessary at Bar Mali. 10.000 CFA for overnight at your hotel (Kanaga is splendid and girl-friendly) and 8.000 for a shorttimer is the right price, but they start out much higher! My policy is, haggle as hard as you can to be respected as a "Toubab", and then there is space to tip her if the action was good.

an update !

The world is changing faster every day. And this is the same in Africa as I could realize coming to Mali again. Now, after 18 months, crowds of youngsters have a mobile phone, which is a real "must" to be cool. A mobile needs some money, so the prices have changed in some sectors.

In fact it is impossible now, to get a nice girl for 10.000 CFA a night. There are 2 possibilities:

1. You look for a "friend". Just talk to a nice girl on the street, invite her for a dinner, see her the next day for a drink and have sex with her after 3 days. Through this, you will have a beautiful non-professional, most times with hot sex. After each date you will give her money "for the taxi". At the end, you have to pay around 40.000 CFA to have the first sex with her, after that, it's getting cheaper
The more time you have, the better girl you get for less money

2. You just want to have sex right now. Go the discos/bars. Every one can tell you the "in-places", which will change very fast. For the moment, the BYBLOS in Bamako is the place with the best women (don't get in before midnight), in the daytime you may be lucky in the GRAND MUREILLE, which in fact is a chinese restaurant with mostly ugly women to get after about 1 pm. I found a really stunner, a senegalese girl - so just try. Prices are 15.000 CFA (if you are discussing some time; for about 2 hours), normally more than 20.000 CFA the night

The rest is up to you. Many girls just want to do sex twice: after entering the room and in the morning (but this is really hot sex every time !!!!). If the "chemistry" is o.K., you will get a lot more.

It's quite difficult to get a foto. So just one example of a really hot lady (non-professional, a "girl-friend" from a malian friend of mine). She refused to take a foto from her nice but.

"Bar Mali" in Mopti in fact is a good place to find a girl to fuck. But here, you will find only women from the "lower end".

A much better choice is, to take a taxi to Sévaré, which is about 12 km on a good road. You will find many girls on the main road to Bamako around the Motel de Sévaré, which itself offers nice rooms at a good price.

I found a very cute lady, invited her in a bar for a drink. I paid 10.000 CFA, a good price for a white man. My african friend paid 5000 to a girl he allready new. As he told me, she did all including BBBJ, which my girl refused. Sometimes life can be strange.

So try it on the main road beginning at about 09:00 p.m. Or just go in one of the 3 bars. You find the same girls here too.

In Mopti, the "Bar Mali" is paradise. It has both rooms for rent - very basic, with shared bathrooms - and girls on the premises. Very convenient. It is just a few steps from the girls' rooms to your own.
Asking price, when confronted with the sudden prospect of a rich white customer, tends to be 10.000 CFA but is easily negotiated to 5.000 (locals are rumoured to pay 2.000 or less for a quickie but I did not want to stretch it that far). This is for an unhurried ST and they will be very nice to you because local customers don't treat them so well.

A striking experience was quietly communicating by smiles and sign language with one of them who spoke almost no french. It worked! (but most of them do speak french).

The place is also a favourite backpacker hangout, so be a little discreet in order to not attract moral criticism from them.
zork is a backpacker but sometimes enjoys the dark side of travel :-)
