I am trying to plan a trip to Freetown and would ask for a bit of help. Could anyone tell me about the hotel situation please.

All the hotels on hotel booking sites seem expensive, and I would like some info on which hotels are girl friendly.

Any recommendations or advice would be welcome.

I was back recently again to Freetown. All the same, the bars are now opening up, and life got back to normal. Last report from 2015 said that all bars are removed from Lumley beach, but now more and more places open up. Particularly nice is a 'Warehouse', Papaya, and Quincys for action.

I used to enjoy zipping up and down the strip on motorbikes but now everyone is shoehorned into just a few places. But it was still fun. Recognised a few faces and got updates on who got married, who died, who's a crackhead etc.

Paddy's has opened up as Quincy's. People tend to go there last / late.

Freetown is a brilliant city, and I will definitely return. I can't recommend it until the Ebola outbreak is over though, even though they're down to a dozen or so cases a week at this point. There are hardly any commercial flights, people mostly take the UN planes. They may call another curfew without much warning. There are restrictions on crowds. Bars, clubs etc. Are closed. But once things open up again, it's a great place with lovely people. When I quit travelling for work, and have the leisure to travel for pleasure, I will definitely be back.

Was there just before Christmas 2013 from the US on a quick biz trip; first trip there, though I'm experienced in West Africa (Ghana, Cote'd Ivorie, Senegal). All expenses were paid so I was happy to go. What was to be 4 days on the ground turned into lessthan 48 hours there as a result of US & Canada weather delays both ways.

Stayed at the Bintumani, which I understand is the former 5-star resort (by African standards) before the war, which is now under Chinese control, approx. $150 / day for a double. Rooms were acceptable, again by African standards, but the beds were hard, again as usual in African hotels that don't go out of their way for 'westerners. ' The Chinese did a half-assed, cheap makeover, but didn't bother to install new carpets or repaint the place. My companions' room was mildewed, and the replacement was no better. Good view from the waterfront side, though it overlooks the usual dilapidated housing.

There were always some girls hanging around the pool after dark if you need quick service. Usually, they holler at you if you are alone. As it happened, I was there during a big formal banquet sponsored by the local bar association, with the chief justice of the nation's supreme court as well as the president in attendance, all dressed in tuxes and formal gowns. Not necessarily a target-rich environment for quick mongering, but there were some lookers there (after all, this is West Africa.)

The music started banging about midnight & they were still going strong till 2:30 a. I cannot recommend going further afield into town or eastside unless you have a reliable driver and some local guys you trust. If you go upline, Wusum Hotel and Clubhouse in Makeni.

As for payment, try for 60, 000Le and you might just get away with it. Negotiation is a bit easier for me because I have a house and they can't make a fuss because the guards will throw them out and we have 4 dogs, one of which is a Dobermann, so they are afraid to sneak off in the dead of night with the silverware, they need to be escorted out the gate.

You are absolutely right when you are referring to snagging a civilian. But you have to be patient to snag a real beauty.

As for 'Aces' that's like a last option, you'll always be lucky there.
