Welcome to Cairo. Everything you described is normal here. The Uber drivers don't know their way around and getting stopped by touts by the pyramids is par for the course. It's just gotten worse over the past few years because of the downturn in tourism. The phone search thing is mainly in the downtown area and is due to security concerns and worries about foreign agitators as well as locals using social media to stir up trouble.

You can't compare Egypt to Asia or even sub Saharan Africa. This is a place where prostitution is highly illegal, even though quite common. What's needed here is common sense and preparation. The mongers who have reached out to experienced players here before coming have often had a good time. But this isn't the kind of place where you can just land at the airport, check in and hit a bar and pick up women. That's a recipe for returning home empty handed.

I've got a bucket list of must see countries. Egypt was one and I'm so glad I got to see some key sites and survived with no arrest. Wish I could have spent 2-3 weeks in Israel as well but it's still closed. I'm sure there are many gems in Egypt. It took me awhile in Philippines before noticing that some of the women are hot and given the population density, you see them more often.

So it sounds like if you get an Egyptian girl you like, she's more likely to take good care of your needs than is a Moroccan girl. That's good to know. I was really grateful to my guides and especially the Egyptian doctor who befriended me without any motive. If I ever go to a country like that again, I'm going to line up a wise wingman and cover his costs. It's worth it in Egypt.

And subsaharan Africa is no walk in the park. Congo is supposed to be quite dangerous based in info I got from locals and police in Uganda and Kenya are out of control.

By the way, the hotel receptionist seemed very sincere and nice in trying to help me out with things. But she lacked competence and when I wanted to check my new SIM phone by calling her, she said she cannot give me her cellphone number (maybe married or something). Anyway, as far as mongering goes, it seems like a country which requires a huge amount of effort for possible return so unless you are particularly into Egyptian girls, the country may not have much merit as a purely mongering destination. For girls with that look, wouldn't there be better alternatives such as Lebananon or Jordan perhaps? Sorry for simplistic questions but I'm a complete newbie in Muslim and. Africa / Middle East and forum seems to be mainly about hardcore stuff.

I do know of of one guy who apparently is working Saudi Arabia by online dating. He says you can go part way and many fathers are trying to marry off their daughters to foreigners for sake of the dowry payment. Wish there was more info on that type of stuff.

It is really unfortunate that you had to go through this I apologize, Egypt after all is a 3rd world military-ruled non English-speaking country with super ignorant and xenophobic people. You shouldn't come here with high expectations in the first place, and its definitely not mongering friendly. The scene was a bit passable back in the day (pre-2011) but it deteriorated quickly ever since.

Also, I take pain medications. Tramadol is over the counter in much of Asia. Guess what. A couple years ago, a British woman got 3 years just for bringing in 200 tablets of tramadol into Egypt for her boyfriend.

The roads are dangerous with lots of potholes and unfinihsed areas and people drive recklessly at high speeds in the evenings. The first night at my hotel on Tahrir Sq. , a car smashed right through police barricades and almost hit my building right under my second floor window. At first I thought it was a car bomb. But later, it appeared to just be a common auto accident.

September 20 is a very sensitive date which only made things there worse. I only found out later the significance of this date.

Finally, when I moved out to Giza second day, my Uber took a wrong turn and ended up in an area where people hire horse and camel rides. Well, these teenage kids were banging on the window trying to get into his car and I could see that not only was I shaken but so was my driver. Fortunately, he was able to turn around and speed out of there up to the nearest check point.

At my Giza hotel, I met a cool young Egyptian doctor who spoke decent English on the rooftop and he walked me into town to look around. He had to fight off the various touts by speaking rapidly but politely in Arabic and is seemed each tout would persist for 2-5 minutes so it's really a hassle. So glad I wasn't alone.

So more specifically, if you go to Egypt, only take photos in obvious tourist areas (pyramids, inside museum, etc.), don't stay near Tahrir Sq. (not only are police there hyper sensitive but it's very noisy day and night), and don't dare bring in any narcotic pain meds including tramadol even if you have a prescription. If you get into any trouble, you may not be given the benefit of the doubt and common sense may not rule. This country is higher risk in my opinion than any of the ones I visited in sub-Saharan Africa.

Surprisingly, many of the travel warnings and safety reports paint Egypt as a fairly safe country while demonizing much/most of sub-sahran Africa. They also demonize countries like the Philippines which is actually pretty safe. Frankly, their advice, based on my on-the-ground travel experience, is largely inaccurate and not only fairly useless but even misleading. I should have asked Neddy more about specifics of Egypt because he has experience there and knows what's going on. A well informed ISG guy will always give you much more accurate read than all the BS travel warnings you see online.

I just visited Cairo and Giza for 3 days. Had some very close calls with police a couple times and also my Uber got lost in Giza and some teens were banging hard on the windows trying to get in.

It's a serious police state and there many seemingly innocent things you can do which could land you straight in jail. Prescription pain meds can also get you into big trouble. They don't play here.

So don't go without having a briefing discussion with someone in the know or else without meeting up with a trusted ISG member on the ground when you arrive.

One huge thing you are forgetting, is that the probability of getting busted by a police raid is extremely higher and more common than the UAE, Egyptian police have a classic approach in which they leave the scene for a period of time and then swoop in a series of raids on all of the MPs / brothels. I definitely wouldn't be comfortable laying there naked and thinking of the worst possible outcome, which is the opposite of being relaxed, loose and happy (the whole point of a massage parlor to begin with).

I would recommend renting a discreet ground floor apartment, bringing in street walkers every now and then until you can get back to the UAE, better be safe than sorry.
