Two days at Bahir Dar.

Even Badoo does not list this place, but it's quite a big town. People are surprisingly soft, friendly and humble. My project put me in a good hotel, 100 Euro the room (H. Hotel). But no electricity was going in my room (I changed the room), no telephone worked ("sorry but phones don't work in the whole building" steaming hot water poured from the shower difficult to adjust to warm temperature, no butter or butter-like thing at the breakfast buffet, reception area gets swept several times a day with a soapy liquid and I nearly broke my neck.

But hot water can be also useful to! I order tea with milk, milk aside, of course they came with a pot of hot milk and a tea bag. I started some discussion, two room girls joined too. They had a brilliant idea, they went to the bathroom opened the hot water tap and explained to me that I can use this hot water to soak the tea bag LOL.

However staff was extremely attentive and polite, even gave my phone number to one of the cuties (T.). A relief compared to Addis. An attractive girl called A. (Ok, another interesting area seems to be not far away too: from Airport road again into town, passing St. Mikel Church, turn right before the big roundabout (with traffic light), than left again. It's called "Kawale Arat". We went to "Kolba-Restaurant" for lunch (30 birr =2 Euro) for a bayaganatu vegetable plate, 3 person could eat from it, its however 70 birr in Addis). Hey I discovered a dozen of bedrooms in the backyard of the restaurant while searching for a toilet, what they are for, pulling a girl into them!? My friends from work also said it will be a "hot" area at night. I enclose a photo of the washing arrangement at Kolba.

Ok back to the evening before: I started walking in the dark near "Gabare Café", turning right, some filthy bars appeared similar to the bars in Leyland road (Chechenia) in Addis. Some young girls running around in these bars, but I could not imagine to pump one of them on one of these dirty bed which might have been available at the back building? It remembered me a little walking in dirty Falklandroad / Bombay 30 years ago. Or even I was reminded on some village road in Brazil?

I abandoned this area and I phoned to A. And the Baja driver understood where she lived. It was not so near, we passed halve of Bahir Dar town which is quite an extended town, we passed BessMass Hotel and he turned some small lane right after. Hey, I got nervous more and more and I was on the point to abandon my plan, adventure pure. Me alone in some dark corner of this town which I did not know at all. To what filthy place will I be dropped? I made a deep breath. Finally I saw her on the road, surprisingly she was surrounded by some honorable people to which said "good bye" to each other. She lived in a tall spacious single room, poor but nicely arranged. The room was very high. I spent 4 nights at BeerGarden Inn last week. Hotel is guest-friendly, just leave ID card at reception. Room functional, only double bed, and only 1 large towel everyday. WiFi is spotty. All the ladies and taxi's know it. Their ground floor bar / brewery is very busy in the evening with locals and expats. Didn't discern any freelancers there, but on WeChat several not far away. Varying quality requesting 2000 to 3000 in tips. Hani massage is a 100 m round the corner past Monarch hotel, and several massage venues such as Mack, Sabela, Take and Cozy diagonally opposite EDNA Mall which is the other direction. AA is not big, have a look on google maps. PINK massage was a taxi ride away on Ethiopia-China road. A bit grungy, just a mattress on the floor. Pricing in massage shops was 200-300 for a short massage, 200 for HJ, and 500 up for full service. Need to negotiate sometimes. No girl offered BJ's. Flirt Lounge and Republic Disco had a lot of people inside, if you want to meet normal locals. Concord Hotel bar on the other hand, had a 100 birr entrance fee and 20-25 hookers inside blatantly sitting on the sidelines looking for customers. Their GASLIGHT nightclub only open Thurs to Sat doesn't get busy till after midnight. Strict about shoes / no sneakers. AA is not for everyone, but after living in Pattaya 10 years, I found it an interesting diversion.

Was in Bahir Dar. Another nice vacation-worthy spot in Ethiopia, the source of Blue Nile. Has among the hottest per capita collection of beauties anywhere in the world; reminded me of Rio. Ethiopia is too diverse even within Bahir Dar alone, in general if you like sexual intensity Bahir Dar is the right place, especially villagers with facial ink. Addis is same as always. Lots of mongering options, hot chicks, with mostly below average service by global standards. I visited plenty of the rub and shag joints, and the damage was consistently 700 (2230-250 massage, the rest for FS). Most ladies will quote 1300 - 2000, so be prepared to bargain, they expect it. For the sharky ones who insist on staying firm, be prepared to walk, they'll almost certainly relent.

Hi. Does anyone know of any self-catering style apartments or rooms to rent for about a week in Addis, ideally reasonably central? I've tried Airbnb but nothing really jumps out. There are plnety of small guest houses but I was looking for somewhere that gave me a bit more privacy and independence.

For mongering its a good option if you are staying for an extended period not a week (that way you call in your regulars). Bad option for short-term because the Pros will increase rates (based on your Villa status alone), Most Non-Pros call you when they need money or just feel like it, the advantage is with slightly older Non-Pros who drive their own, those prefer to meet in a villa rather than the guest-house or hotel, maybe you can pick a nice one within a week.

If you must rent your own villa, google Addis Ababa real estate agents, ask for one in CMC or Bole Homes as those are the exclusive parts of Addis Ababa.

Bole Homes better for Pros (walking distance to Bole and 22).

CMC possibly better for Non-Pros (A bit away from the main Pro districts).

First, thanks to all of you, for sharing your experience and giving valuable information about the scene in Addis.

I arrived a few weeks ago and made my first experiences. Good and bad.

The good ones: getting BBBJ was in 50% of the encounters no problem! They didn't ask for extra money.

Bad: walked away several times when quoted more then 500 or paying in forehand.
