I haven't been to Baro, but the trip advisor review says its a proper knocking-shop, Piazza is a known hot spot in a city thats known for the numbers of bar girls. I've been to addis and believe me you don't have to sleep alone if you don't want.

Where'd you get that idea?

I stayed at the Taitu most of the time I was in Ethiopia. Very comfortable place. Rooms were about $12-$18 a night depending on what you wanted. The most expensive room was I think $30.

The cheapest hotels in Bangkok are maybe the 500-600 baht / night places around Soi Nana that double as go-go bars. Those are $15-$18, so about the same price as the Taitu. The bathrooms in those places tend to be a little better and the beds are a bit bigger, but overall the Taitu is much more comfortable. Much better environment inside the hotel lobby- they have a comfortable sitting area, free wi-fi, good food, a nice open-air patio in back. A place you would be comfortable taking a girlfriend or your parents. Unlike the places on Soi Nana which have trashy go-go bars downstairs and big rats running around in the back rooms.

The cheapest hotels in Addis are the places that double as brothels. Those rooms can be had for as little as $4-$5 a night. They are absolute garbage, but I don't know of any places in Thailand that are so cheap. Actually I heard the Baro Hotel in Addis is reasonably comfortable for backpackers, and it has rooms for only 5 or 6 dollars.

If you want to go nicer in Addis, you can stay at places like the Jupiter or Sheraton. You will pay more for it, but you'll be very comfortable. Just like you can pay more for high-end hotels in Bangkok. I stayed at a nice hotel in Bangkok for about the same price as I was paying for a room at the Jupiter. Just make sure with Addis you go to the hotel in person and don't book online where you will get gouged big time.

And of course other popular destinations in Thailand like Phuket and Chiangmai are generally speaking more expensive than Bangkok.

Pretty much every bar around the Piazza is actually a brothel. Actually they usually call themselves hotels. The small crappy hotels with prominent bars up front are all functionally brothels. Only someone very desperate or very cheap would choose to use these places as an actual hotel. The room up front by the street (the bar) is for meeting the girls, who are mostly out at night but will be there in smaller numbers during the day as well. In the back are very shitty very small rooms that can be rented by the hour. Many of the girls who you would meet at the bar at night sleep in the same building during the day. They'll be happy to go with you any time you want to proposition them, or you can stay on the premises and fuck them there.
