    Hi,

there is definitly no need for malaria protection in Lalibela, Mahku is right. In Gondar you should have it (not a difficult thing with DOXY - cheap and good if you don't plan to get grilled on a beach)

I've been reading all this 'the girls don't perform' stuff but I guess I was just lucky. I almost never had trouble finding girls that were great in bed, great looking and great GFE.

    I found girls at:

The Concord disco, like everyone else
    Milkhouse
Coffee places on Bole Road (like New York New York)
and hooked up after hours with a hotel receptionist.

Also note that in 2 tries at the Sheraton disco I couldn't find anything worth taking home.

I never paid more than 200 birr.

Places I stayed and brought girls back to:

Hilton. It's expensive of course, but it can also be a hunting ground itself.
Ibex. It's a bit out of the way but medium priced and nice enough.
Concord. Convenient but noisy in the rooms and lots of roaches.
Ghion. Has a $15 joiner fee. Rooms are just ok, nice grounds.
Imperial. Out of the way, sort of near the airport.

For more detail read old reports.

By the way I went to Lalibela and never heard about needing malaria protection. It's at 2500 meters altitude so probably not a whole lot of mosquitos anyway.

    Hi Curtis,

I just spend 1 week in Addis. I had planned to stay 2,5 weeks but after 5 days and 3 girls I decided to leave Addis. The girls performace was bad and the city boring. Well the last two days were good and the girl number 4 was really good. But, didn't change my flight schedule, because the city as really not much to offer, from sightseeing point of view and to Lalibela and Gondor I don't want to go, because I had no Malaria protection.
Well, what can you do in Addis.
    Good place to eat:

    The old Milkhouse (dinner)
New York New York (Lunch and breakfast)

    Good place for pros:

    Memos
    Concord Hotel
    both start late. After 23:30.

    Good place for sightseeing:
    Mt. Entodo
    National Moseum
and some Churches in the city.
Nothing real exciting, you can do that in one day.

Internet is very slow and expensive in Addis.

Hotel, I was in Concord, was nice and not too expensive, just some Mosquitos or flees or what ever had bite me there.

You are right it's difficult to find girlfriend type of girls here. Ok, maybe not sooo difficult, but it's difficult to find a good looking girl, who is girlfriend type and good in bed. Maybe I demand too much.
Was yesterday in a street called Tora Bora and is also known as Tschetschenia. There are on bar after the next. Even on Monday night there were alot of people. There is for sure easy to find a girl, but unfortunatelly not very pretty girls. The pretty ones are mostly very arrogant and do not even flirt.
Well, Addis has also some good points, it's a save place even in Tora Bora and it has a good climate. In the night it's cold and on daytime not too hot. Well, from sight seeing point of view Addis has not much to offer. From girls point of view it's also not a good place. In Concorde the price for a night with a good looking girl is nowadays 500 birr. The eighter go alone home than go down with the price. Sex is very basic not to say boring with them. But, maybe I have not found the right places jet.

    DG69,

It is very difficult to find girlfriend type of material in Ethiopia. Since most Ethiopians live below poverty line, girls worship money than love. Take your time; be extra careful whom you chose to take to bed. And pay them after. Always negotiate price and do not over pay. They will basically accept anything.

    Enjoy your stay in Addis.

    Of course not.

Yesterday was my first full day in Addis. The town itself has not too much to offer. No, old quarter with historical buildings, only modern archithecture and wooden huts. On the streets some beggars, but surprisingly less bothering like in other countries.
The nightlife starts late. I went to milk house at 7 o'clock but it was obviously too early, no availabel girls there. So, I went out on the street I talked to a girl who just went out from a bar. Than I went to my pub, there was even more empty. So, I went back to my Hotel and had a sleep. At 11 o'clock I went to the dome. There was this Ethiopian dance and music band. At 11,30 it ends and slowly the disco got crowdy. There were some stunner under the mostly average girls. I talked with one of them. She asked for 100 Dollar and I laughed about that. She immediatly went down to 500 birr. She was a real beauty and maybe worth the 500 birr, but first of all it was just too early, second I wanted also to she Memos and I thought she is too professional. I went to Memos , but same style like the Dome, with for my impression less beauties. So, I went back to the dome. I took a slim, tall girl with a nice round ass. She asked first for 400 for the night and agreed with 250 birr. The sex with her was not so good. No blow job and it seems that she had pain at the sex. Maybe I just need too long time. At night I couldn't even finish and at the morning I did it again and than it was possible. She was a nice girl, but in bed not very good. But, that had not surprised me I knew from Dubai that the Ethiopian girls are no great lovers. At least the Ethiopian prostitutes, I don't know how they are as girlfriends.

    DG69,

    Do not over pay them.

    Arrival

At least I managed to go to Addis. I arrived this morning and checked in, in the Concord Hotel. Well the room is not the best but Ok, it's now 250 Birr per night. I also saw a room at Ibex today but isn't better in shape and even more expensive. Well, maybe I have to see some more hotel. The room in the Concord isn't too bad, but it's a bit too loud in the morning for a healthy sleep.
I also visit at 4 am the night club at the Concord Hotel. Well some babes were there and they were pretty persistent. Unfortunatelly just the not so good looking once. After I could escape them there, I could talk with a quite pretty girl. Just talked a little and after I had drunk my beer I wasn't sure if I should take her to my room, because I was quite tired. Well, just to get an imagination about the current priceses I asked her how much she charge for a LT. She don't want to tell and said I should tell. As far I know the price is usually 200 birr, as I have read here in the thread. I told her I would pay her 150 birr, just to she her reaction. Well, she look very disappointed and said no. So, I got the impression that she expect much more. But, first of all I was to tired and second I think 150 birr for 4 o'clock am is should be ok. I leave her and went to my room alone. Well after a long flight I enjoyed a good sleep until I was waked up by the riot at the street.

If some fellow monger is at this time in Addis I would like to meet him for a beer and share experience. I will stay until second of November in Addis!

    Cheers

    Losing battle

I agree with you guys about the general price structure. I never paid more than 200 myself. But I don't feel like it's any use getting exercised over guys paying larger amounts. There are just too many people out there with more money than sense and they're just gonna pay what they pay. Anyway, if you think the 600 is bad I heard of guys paying 300 bucks...as in US dollars. In Ethiopia that's really hideous.

  12. #175

    Why 600 Bill

I agree. We shouldn't spoil the market. Generosity is not a bad idea but keeping the mongering economics in balance is also important.

    Why 600 birr?

    Hi John

I read your report and it made me even more looking forward to my Ethiopia trip 3 weeks from now.

I have been to places like this dormitory before, not in Ethiopia, but elsewhere in Africa, and it is fun! You are right, sometimes you might loose some money on drinks etc., but why not enjoy the evening and be generous.

What I don't get, though, is why do you pay 600 birr for the Concord girl, ca. 60 USD, which almost is the going rate in Europe for a similar experience? According to CIAs Worldfact Book, the average annual income in Ethiopia is 800 USD. You give this girl a monthly salary! Have you ever calculated, that the same price, projected to the US, amounts to over 2.000 USD for one night? The going rate in Ethiopia is less than half of 600 birr, and this is already a faranji price. Ethiopians - also rich - haggle these girls down to 50 birr.

I think, we have to keep this in mind, and although generosity is a good thing, our reputation as reasonably thinking people is at stake. Yes, it is right: African think we are completely bonkers, if we pay too much.

    Chewing the leaf

The one time I chewed tchat (or qat, or whatever) it took a loooong time to have any effect.

My guide in Lalibela and some of his buddies took me into a 'qat house.' It's basically just stuffing a whole lot of leaves in your mouth and chewing it like tobacco. The taste and feel isn't so different from chewing grass or any other leaf. After more than an hour of this I wasn't feeling anything and I was wondering if the guys were playing some prank on me. But gradually I started to feel more energetic, hyper even. A qat chewing session goes on a long time, 4 hours or more. You get very thirsty while you chew, so copious amounts of tea are drunk. The effect of the leaves also takes a long time to wear off. I was too keyed up to sleep for most of the following night. The guys I was with told me they like to go get drunk to help bring themselves back down.

Qat is popular in Ethiopia and Djibouti, but banned in Eritrea. It's also big in Yemen, but not allowed in a lot of the rest of the Arabian peninsula.

Oh yea, I also tried tchat and didn't feel anything, the taste is not very pleasant either but apparently it helps you concentrate.
I used to live in Somalia. Although I never tried it, my understanding is that tchat is a mild narcotic and if you chew enough of it, you end up in a zonked-out state and unable to maintain an erection. Hard to understand how it helps you concentrate?

My advice to most readers would be to not bother trying this stuff - may get you in more trouble than you want to be in.
