Had been to Addis, after checking in a hotel and a sleep took a walk, a friendly tout joined me in the walk, later he took me to a local watering hole my mistake, there were some free lancers, had a beer, and made a mistake of ordering lady drinks, when the bill came it was a shocking 300 USD, tried to negotiate but no relent, finally paid up and left as alone did not want to have further trouble. Beware of such scams that are similar to Bangkok gogos.

The place is fourth world and there no pavements or good roads, or even restaurants, however the prices are too high compared to other places in the world.

Give the place a wide berth for the next 10 years and put your dollars elsewhere.

Sorry to hear but you are not the 1st one to report such con. The MO is the same, a friendly man will join you and inform you where to find the youngest, collage student type etc and take you to a local bar. In Africa never trust anyone you don't personally know and don't carry large amount of cash (USD 300 is alot of money in Ethiopia).

You can still have alot of fun and can get amenities if you go to the upmarket places. But as you said it is stupidly expensive and you don't get value for money compared to SE Asia.

Generally I pay 15 birr or about 70 ¢ a drink.

Africa is rapidly changing, however it will require many years to reach Thailand standards in terms of infrastructure, amenities and prices and seeing all tourists as walking ATMs.
