...seems to be the place close to action. There is a night club on the ground floor and another one "Safari Club" nearby. After sunset you will find as well the streetwalker scene in front of the hotel. Rooms are from CFA 16000.

I stayed in "El Panaden" just around the corner for the same price/same standard. Next to "El Panaden Hotel" is a restaurant "La Terrasse" where girls wait sometimes in the afternoon.

I found a few banks with ATM's for visa electron and one in the city center connected with the plus system , I've tried both with a european and an american check card and it worked well, but anyway, the advice with the western union back up seems resonable to me as the whole banking system makes a "wanna be complicated" impression.

Always carry your passort, lots of police checkpoints, especially at night, asking for it. Once I didn't have it, I've spent more than one hour with them negotiating the fine down from 37500 to 7000

And, are all the hotels girl friendly, similar to what someone has posted on the Ghana board?

Girl friendlyness is no problem, all hotels are girlfriendly. If a girl doesn't have her ID papers with her, just thrust 5 dollars into the doorman's palm and she'll be let in.

I heard Mercure is a new hotel in Yaoundé. Someone I spoke to on the phone yesterday told me "Indépendance" is another, cheaper hotel with a "boîte de nuit" (pick-up place) nearby. There's a hotel called "Meus" or something similar. It is to be avoided: that's where a Cameroun girl hosted me years ago on my first visit to Cameroon. I had contacted her by post from home and she was wise enough to stash me away in a hotel far from the action, so that I wouldn't be tempted to leave her for another girl. Otherwise I don't remember much about Yaoundé.

Remember Cameroon is a cash country. Budget everthing in cash terms, even if you're told that your hotel accepts visa. You visa card could be rejected for some obscure reason when the time has come to settle. Fifty and one hundred euro banknotes are best, avoid the two hundred ones. Leave a lump-sum with a friend or relative back home so that they call bail you out via Western Union if you ever fall short of cash. I've read that visa cash advances could be got at the ATMs of SGBC (Société Générale des Banques du Cameroun) but don't count on it, it will probably turn out to work only with visa cards issues by French banks.

An advice I've given to people who worry about language is that they shouldn't hesitate to talk authoritatively in their native tongue to the people they want to influence. Even if you know they don't understand a word, main thing is they get your drift and feel you mean business.

Thanks for the advice, but I have already decided to go to Yaounde. First, I want to learn some French. Its a bit of a challenge. Second (and more importantly), I can do some business there, so the people back home don't know I am out and about solely to chase women.

I have read that picking up non pros is easy in these parts. Assuming that my French is in reasonable shape (I can already communicate without difficulty), is Yaounde not a good place to go?

If you speak spanish, go in Equatorial Guinea, just down Cameroon.

Otherwise, go in the north of Cameroon where people speaks english.

i am a veteran of sao paulo brazil, where i regularly stay at a mercure (accor) hotel. i decided to go to africa, because i love picking up non-pros, and it seems to be easy in africa. i decided i needed to find out if this is true!

my first question is whether anyone has been to the accor mercure hotel in yaounde, if it has high speed internet and if it is girl friendly. my french sucks, but my plane reservation is in november. since i speak spanish and portuguese, took 8 years of french classes in public school and even lived in france for a month (36 years ago!), i think that i will have some basic skills available to me for communication.

i have been reading this board religiously, and hope to make the best out of my 5 days in yaounde. thanks

I was in Douala for 4 days. My view of this place is probably not complete, but here is what I found:

in general. a typical african city, from my point of view, no attractions, big harbour, very busy, hot and humid. the city center is called Akwa. this is where most of the hotels are and as well the action, night clubs.

daytime action. there is no special place in this town I could recommend for easy daytime pick-up's. but, as in most other sub-saharan countries, it is of course possible to chat up the girls on the street. most of the "regular" girls in this country seem to be interested in contacts with foreigners.

nighttime action. across from "Akwa Palace Hotel" is a restaurant, "The Mediterranee", where girls arrive after sunset, sometimes as well in the afternoon, but wouldn't rely on it. from about 8 pm starts a SW scene on Independence Boulevard (which is the center of Akwa) from Akwa Palace Hotel northbound. night clubs are plenty, most of the popular ones as well in Akwa. they don't open before 10 pm and nothing really starts before 12 pm (at weekends earlier I've been told). to name a view: St Pieres, Orange Metalica, Blue Note.

Hotels. are plenty in Akwa and obviously as well in other parts of the town. I've stayed in 2 different hotels. the Foyer du Marin (seamans mission), very clean, excellent value, but probably the only hotel in town which is not girl-friendly. (I hooked up a cutie right at the airport at my arrival and registered with her in Foyer du Marin, this was no problem, but I've been told from other girls later that this place is not girl-friendly). later I stayed in Beausejour, very close to action. for whoever doesn't care about the money, at the end of the scale you find the Akwa Palace and Parfait Garden very close to the action.

Transportation: Is easy and affordable. drop-off and shared taxis are most popular and moto's (motorbike's who take 1 or 2 pax).

Language: It definetly helps to speak a little french. Most people/girls don't speak english (means: they all seem to know a limited amount of vocabulary, but don't really know well how to use it). but there are some (few) they do.

Prices (1euro=665CFA): Hotels with reasonable standards start at 16000 (for example Foyer du Marin), but you better calculate 20000-30000, for a little more comfort rather 50000.

Food is quiet expensive from my point of view (for Africa) inside the popular places and/or european-run restaurants. For example pizza in Mediterranee 3000-5000. Soft drinks 1000.

Night clubs seem to take as much as they can get. most places drinks start at 3000 or 4000 (found some cheaper places in Yaounde and Kribi, I'm sure there are cheaper places in Douala as well, but not in Akwa and not the popular one's) transportation is surprisingly cheap, a taxi will get you to most of the places in the city center for less than 1000 and the motos for 100-300.

Chicks: Quiet a variety of different looks, some of the are quiet pretty and definetly some few are very pretty. none of those I got to know seemed to fous to much on the money, it seemed the phone number and the chance for a longer relationship was more important to them, 5000-10000 for the taxi was always ok.

Security: The city center seems a little rough after sunset. Lots of undesired company walking with you along the, for sure better to take a taxi at night.

Advice please. Reading the reviews I can't decide between Ghana, Cameroon or Nigeria. On the balance of all factors (price, quality, quantity, culture, ease of transport etc), which country do you recommend for 2 weeks of debauchery?

Actually FoxesHunter posts on other Africa threads asking about "transexuals," of course he was called out on the Ghana thread too and says bizzare things like '...I asked because I don't like them, and want to avoid them...sorry if the word disturb yourself.' Here's some advice FoxesHunter if you trully do not appreciate them like most everyone else on this board....do yourself a favor....stop posting about them....otherwise you definitely sound like a perv and I advise you would stop posting period. I don't know if you know this, but they're kind of touchy around this site about the whole transexual thing. Touchy enough that you could even get banned for asking too much about them. The best thing to do is just avoid the topic in general.
