I'm planning a trip to Mombasa in December/January and I'm looking for advice on how to book a hotel.

I did a search on the internet, but only found very expensive hotels. I'm sure Mombasa must have some cheap places to stay?

Where do you guys usually stay?

Must confess I really enjoyed your pics and reports and I don't think you have to be sad about this musumba.

See in from the positive side, you and all of us mongers have learnt a lesson not to trust people too easy. You still have the money you safed for all this years and have the chance to invest it wise. It would be much worse if you would have invested already and someone have messed you up.

Kenya is a wonderful country espc. For us mongers but keep in mind investing is such countries is high risk cause the legal-system isn't like europe and people can really mess you up or make your business suffer espc. When they are powerful and have influence.

Don't worry my friend because FACTS are what really matter in life and you,through the years, have proved with your useful infos to be a GOD for all of us . I have publicly warned Max/Efremof a few times on his exploits and that this may catch up with him. Kenyan police are hard core if they have cause or reason.

I don't think we should lynch Mousomba for bringing this out I love to look at Efremof's pictures but I disagree with his sensationalizing of the ladies because it may put them at risk. This is not at joke.

I am not surprised to find out that the ladies all know him. When I used to frequent places like F-2 it was obvious form talking to the ndogos ndogos (hookers) almost everything about some of the guys. Many of these "
working girls" are like a small gang of women.

Hi all. Being a n00bie, always looking for a way to contribute.

If you go to this World Social Forum link - http://wsf2007.org/info/accommodation - there is another link that allows a download of an Excel spreadsheet. Some wonderful person(s) did a lot of work on this, as it shows almost all hotels in and around Nairobi, together with USD and KSh prices, and single/double rates, divided into (under 20USD)/(20-100 USD)/(over 100USD).
(It doesn't list my favorite hotel, which I will not share. Sorry! It's not girl-friendly anyway.)

The list was last updated in October 2006, so the price may be a bit off. Also consider that Kenyan Shilling fluctuates. A lot. And a few hotels may no longer exist.

I imagine that each year the WSF will update this list, so keep a bookmark handy. I just wish they maintained a column for "Girl-Friendly?"

I can't claim I know much about Kenya as I only been there once. I guess Musomba knows much more about this as he lives there but it is on the other hand difficult to know what water is when you are a fish :) ( I would definitely like to hear your comment about this Musomba!).

But, with my limited experience, I would say that it's at least 10 times more likely that you will find a lady accepting BDSM in for example Thailand then in Kenya. Kenyan women are available, yes, but they are not prostitutes in the same way as in Thailand. It's a very confusing difference in culture. Yes, there are prostitutes in Kenya, but on the other hand, any woman is more or less available. Does it mean all Kenyan ladies ARE prostitutes? No, it doesn't.

I would say this:

∑ Yes you will surprisingly enough be able to score with almost any lady,
∑ Yes you should always pay her something - albeit called "taxi money"
∑ No, you wont find any more ladies fancying BDSM than for example in Europe (and no less for that matter!)

If you want to indulge in "special interest mongering things" then you should go to countries having a developed sex industry. Kenya doesn't have that! It doesn’t mean it's not the perfect place to go to, but, as far as my conclusion goes, no, just like in Europe, most women will not accept BDSM before they know you very well. In Europe, as far as I am concerned, most women willingly accept soft forms of BDSM when they know the fellow.

Kenyan women are NOT submissive! They are, as far as I can see, VERY proud of themselves. I would say that more or less anything is possible or negotiable in Thailand, but not so in Kenya (please correct me if I'm wrong, Musomba)

The reason for this is the following; most ladies you will encounter, that are really ATTRACTIVE, will be found at discos and similar. They are NOT prostitutes in the same way as ladies are in for example Pattaya, but, they are AVAILABLE in a sense that I not fully understand. But certainly appreciate! (I wrote more about it here:

I don't like to carry hundreds of $$ on my travel if not necessary. I have a CC without drawing fee on every ATM worldwide, so only the standard 2% "single whacking" ;) Still any reason why I shouldn't use it at ATMs?

The "double-whack" I referred to earlier is that

1) CC's make not-so-obvious extra money by using very unfavorable (for you , that is) exchange rates which, of course, you only discover once you scrutinize your bill.

2) CC's treat ATM withdrawals as a cash advance and charge you ludicrous interest rates until the next cutoff date (my US$ AMEX is now at 24.99 % , my C$ MC at 18.99%) even if you pay your balance in full when due .

My debit card bills me

a) Exchange rates at Interbank rates ( i.e. not at retail )
b) No per transaction fee on any withdrawals worldwide

These savings might be important to you , especially since you seem to intend to stay in a budget motel .

I'll be returning to Nairobi for a few days in mid-September, and it will be my first time back there in ten years. I'll be on my way to (gulp) Juba where I expect to have a very dry time of it.

Does anyone out there know what might be the best spot for meeting French-speaking women, preferably from Rwanda or Barundi? Do they congregate at Club Florida, for example, or is there some other location to which most French-speakers go as there was in Accra, Ghana when I lived there?
