I tried it last month for a change and also as a different way to get from Dar to Mombasa, staying in Stone Town. There wasn't much on view to be honest. One dodgy looking bar close to 6 degrees south (a decent if slightly pricey restaurant) that was very much a 'locals' place that might well have contained a few willing participants but I didn't fancy putting it to the test. One other bar close to the beach that had me, a Euro couple and 3 local males in was the next busiest bar I found. One older / fatter sort wandered in and gave me the eye at one point but I wouldn't have gone there if she were paying! The few other bars I found were largely dead. It was a very pleasant couple of days but, from a talent perspective, a waste of time. To be fair, I was there at the beginning of the week and things might improve at weekends.

Zanzibar is a mainly Muslim place, so my advice is, bring your favorite girlfriend from Kenya.

Thats a year old. Nothing new. Police clampdowns happen regularly. Thats just public show. The concern here is minors engange in prostitution. If you are unlucky to end up in jail as a muzungu, which is likely to happen as often as a lightning strike, than it usually costs you money to get out. Thats all. Depending on the mood of the police. I am sure they collected a lot of bribes that night. 800 people. If you pay them off, than they don't even charge you. Depending on the offence. And don't forget. There is no hookers in africa. You merely just picked up your girlfriend which is getting some taxi money in the morning. Haha. İ stayed at Slipway during my first two visits to DAR and had no problems with the girls.

The westerners' hangouts usually don't close during Ramadan, but maybe during school break as many expats are away then. Hotels do their business as usual.
