Having lived in Tz for around 20 years as an expat I can confirm certain details on this aforementioned matter.

These multicoloured waist beads are worn by the majority of coastal ladies, especially muslim ladies, (this includes Tanga ladies), and as far as I have heard, they serve several purposes, two of which are really practical.
