Amha -- The correct Swahili greeting is "Jambo" (used more in Kenya than in Tanzania, where "Salaamu" is the preferred one). But who cares; you got laid!

I lived in East Africa for a long time, so I can say this with confidence: "Mambo" is slang - kind of like us in the West saying "Wassup." It can also mean "Hey, how are you?" and the correct answer would be either "Safi" or "Poa".

A simple visa issue is a matter of a few bucks. And in this case nothing since you had a visa. They will play like this when they smell money, and lots of europeans get so scared that they pay so of course they laugh and continue.

Just be firm and ignore them, they wont throw you in jail.

(I had a 3 month visa, was there for a week!)

There was a date written by hand on the visa - which was yesterday's date - which I believe that this woman had scribbled in whilst checking the passport.!

She said that there was a $400 fine .. blah blah blah

That happend cause you told them you`ll stay one week wen you just passt the control by arrival. They write the date by hand in your visa an it will expire on that day. So tell them some days more or get an renewal (whithout any costs but much burocraty).

Greenspann who stayd one more than a week longer. They wonted to send me prison e. g. and i left whithout any aditional payment.
