First thing you need to know about Majunga is how to get here and how to get out for example to Nosy be. As I have said the best luxury transport is premier class. Cost to Tana is 78 K and to Nosy be is 128 K including two meals. Brand new Minivan.
Good area to start to look for hotel is "Central Hotel" 57 K for non A/C room. Just next to it you can find hotel "Bella Maria" which has rooms for 35 K.
Google map "Central Hotel".
OK you got here and you have a place to stay but what about food? Restaurants are everywhere that's the best thing about, Majunga.
Try restaurant "Karibo maoraise " next to central hotel.
Majunga has 50% sealed roads and 50% dirt roads. This is a city or what? From central hotel to the "Francois alliance" where the girls hang around on the sea side is the more Vhaza place. From There thurug Avenue andriamisara to Marche de Mahabibo is more down town feel more chaotic.
Tuk Tuk will take you every-ware for 1 K but he will stop to pick up more passengers on the route. Sometimes its like a special hire taxi and you can sit by yourself.
Girls? Mongering? Nightlife? That's not trip advisor here.
To be continue.

If you can ignore the beggars, street children. Pollution and lack of street Mongering opportunities maybe you can find a certain charm in Tana.
I do like the food especially the street food the cafes etc. Delicious baguette full of meat will cost around 4000 ariary. Samosa will cost 200. Taxi just 4000.
For daytime mongering Tana is not the place to be maybe clubs etc but now it is so freezing so I stay with my GF in the room.
I bought a ticket to Mahajunga with the best private company named "transport premiere classe tana" office is inside the "Grand Mellis Hotel". I will travel tomorrow as I leave my GF in Tana.
Same weapon will be used again in Majunga. Facebook-as I have 3 stunners already waiting for me there.

Posts: 2374The Francophone Sommet is on now with African Nations Tennis starting, plus its cold in Tana. Many, many armed military and police presence everywhere. There are a few in uniform with rifles at front of every good or big hotel 24 hours. Not many sex tourists this time of year, but not many girls either -- the hardcore regular, but provincial girls don't usually visit their relatives in Tana in winter and don't drop in LE Glacier. July is a better time to be in one of the coastal cities.

Just arrive to Tana from Bangkok. After two weeks in Pattaya. I stay in Raphia hotel for 36000 ariary. Very nice hotel which I stayed 10 years ago at my first trip.
I am sitting with my facebook girl in the hotel Colbert cafe. Very clean and we can see many girls coming into the hotel looking for vahazas?
The airport was a horror. Very inefficient, 3 lines one for visa one for immigration and one for helth card.
I took a 45 euro visa for 3 month. And a taxi from the airport for 40000 ariary to hotel.
Pattaya was great place to buy a new clothes, luggage and so many gift to the girls. As a result I came with 30 gk.
Taking photos? Well I came here for 3 month's with a mini studio. Dslr flash lenses. Name it.
Facebook. I used it to Pattaya to get new friend but most of them from majunga. I had time to rethink my route so instead the vanilla cost again I am going to Majunga nosy be and Diego.
So this is my second day in tana and I am hanging with my FB friend around Colbert hotel. I did not like the center of villa, too pollution but here around Colbert its much better.
To be continue.

As for the batton, maybe it's a good idea, maybe not. For example, I got shaken down by a pousse pousse guy in Tamatave and didn't want to fight. I had no weapon and all of my stuff with me, I just arrived. If I had a batton like you things might've happened differently. But if you're in your room and guys come knocking the door down, if I would be in that situation again I would just put a stack of money on the table and make sure I'd hidden my passport and cards the night before, then either hide under the bed or just go in a corner. I don't think it's worth a fight. You never know what kind of robber you're going to get and what weapons they have. But like Prison Break says just book a hotel with good security. The places I stay at now I make sure they have at least 2 guys watching the place at all times. Also look around and see if you see any other foreigners. That's always a good sign. I got fucked because like Prison Break said I took a ST room for LT, I wasn't even with someone, it just looked like a comfy room, and it was cheaper. I was dumb. If you do your research and shell out a little money (outside of Tana I would say that 50,000 ariary or more can get you a safe hotel) you'll be fine. I keep hearing things about Diego Suarez though, crazy gangsters running around with guns, the type who don't just rob but kill, so if anyone's thinking of Diego maybe do more research first.

Anyway in my country I pay triple price on every item compare to Thailand so I am wandering who are the real robberies. This is why I stop this week in Bangkok in my way to Tana to buy some supplies for my 3 month trip in Mada.
