You may want to know the law. I wouldn't be surprised if their laws are similar to Western countries' but not enforced. To them you're a rich foreigner. Therefore opportunistic lawyers and even political and civil rights organization would join in the fight against the oppressor the symbol of the ongoing legacy of colonialism etc. To enforce the law to it's fullest. It's sounds crazy but often that's the reality of the Philippines and I have a feeling it's similar in other poor developing countries.
