Went there only once. I liked it instantly.
They played music to my taste. A nice mix of guests and cultivated fellow mongers as well. The bar is a kind of circle in the middle of the floor. On can do the hookerhopping round the bar, then go upstairs whit the choice where there is a small bar again and a chambre separee.
Doable loos by the way.
Since I got hunted down and got offers everywhere even by the hotel stuff I focused on other attractions. Like good, safe food.

Yes it is a institution one has to bee in once. I visited the place twice at night and twice at daylight. Went to the casino upstairs and to the loo downstairs.
To me it is a depressing, fascinating, sleazily. Sh. LE.
Will I go again? For sure.

In addition, the cheapest offer I got for the trip with a 4 WD was 400 EU, as I had to pay for the return trip of the car as well. How much did you pay?

My longtime Mada Veteran friend told me how things are settled here. In the beginning he didn't know the local customs. If you live here at years end the local chef de police or even better the prefet or sous prefet of the province gets a suitable year end cash donation in a brown envelope. Like 200 k the amount is not so important. This is the slush fund for women and booze, as the meagre salary goes to the wife of the guy. After that you'll never be harassed by local police anymore.
My mate told me hilarious story. He travelled with the local sous prefet in his red Mercedes. They were stopped at a police checkpoint. The unfortunate patrolman didn't know he was dealing with the Sous Prefet. After a good dressing down they were on way again. Sans cadeau. My mate was waved through in the whole province whenever he showed up in his red Benz passing through police or gendarmerie checkpoints. LOL.

All it takes is a phone call.

Mate of mine. Expat 30+ years in Mada fell for it too. The girl tried to blackmail him at police. Tough luck for her. My friend knows Chef de Police. 200.000 AR. Problem finish. And the girl was not local. When the local chics found out she blackmailed, she was hounded out of town with two black eyes. And she got zero money. Thats how things are settled in Mada.

Who had some close shaves in Morondave. LOL.

I went there in 2016. Beautiful location but again there's nothing happening daytime and I saw the same faces in the same bar (Florida?) each night.
Hired a driver and went to Tulear. Took 3 nights and was worth every cent. I gave a Dauphin girl a lift which was a waste because word got out each time we arrived in a small town en route about the vahaza and my driver was picking a girl each night from the ones suddenly hanging around in the street outside where we stayed. It cost me 10 k maybe.

Travelled 20 hrs yesterday and after taking 2 planes and 2 trains I am back home. After 6 weeks Madagascar it feels unreal and uneasy to be home again. Yesterday I was in Tana with my ‘holiday girlfriend’. She was crying for hours and speaking Malagasy to me although she can speak French. Now I am in my cold Western apartment and she is in her place in the hot and humid Nosy countryside. I'm experiencing a reverse culture shock. I feel like I went into a time machine and got thrown back in another time and place.
I don't know if I will be going back to Madagascar. I speak fluent French but I felt I was an outsider. As Neddy mentioned before, there is a huge French mongering expat community but they will largely stick to their own. Only in Nosy was I able to penetrate the French bubble. If I do return I'll probably fly directly to Nosy. I will not be going to the south (Tulear) again. In my opinion Tulear is more for French pensioners on a very tight budget. There is not much to see or to do. I don't care if I have to pay 5 Euro or 20 Euro for a girl. I want quality time when I'm on holiday.
On Malagasy scams. In Nosy I spoke with several French Madagascar veterans and they all said the same. If a girl starts making a scene about money and threatens to call the police they simply pay. I don't know how I would deal with that myself. I can't imagine myself paying huge sums just because a girl demands so but on the other hand I also don't want to get into problems with the cops.

What do you mean Mada is not a 'regular' destination? That makes no sense.

Went in Tana to the restaurant 'coin du foie gras' in the Isoraka area. I'm a big fan of goose liver pate. Went there at noon. To my surprise they had an all you can eat cold buffet for 25 k. Very good quality, fresh products, good cooking. After an hour or so they start serving a couple of warm dishes. I think the buffet is only Friday afternoon. If you come specifically for the goose liver you may better come another day. The foie gras at the buffet is a sort of mixed liver. I did get some whole pieces of quality foie gras but that was because I had mentioned that was the reason of my visit. It is not part of the buffet. The restaurant closes at 19:00!
Went with a girl to cinepax cinema at the Waterfront Shopping Center. Tickets 25 k, Thursdays 30 k for 2.
Also went to shopping center La City. Nothing special but resembles somewhat Western shopping centres. Not a slippers and tank top area as I was walking around there LOL.
Opposite hotel Le Relais Normand there is a market area. If you walk in that area through the little alleyways past the 'gargottes' you will see in the back a series of tiny bars of about 2 to 3 square metres. I'm pretty sure they double up as wh*rehouses at night. I don't mind a bit of grubbiness but this is a very deprived area and you have to have suicidal tendencies to walk into the market at night.

No need in trying to read between the lines, since everyone is openly revealing to you the facts about Mada.
Quite certain, everything wears off. Even your most comfortable shoes one day.
So it is just what you make out of it and your personal preference.
Mada has not been and will never become a destination like the regular ones, it is as unique as the ones who like it.
