There are now several Chinese owned operations in Tana that provide an interesting and safe (if expensive) alternative to clubbing and streetwalkers.

One is called Happy Zone, just off the Route Circulaire, near the turn-off to the University (Ankatso). Great restaurant on the bottom floor, pool and karaoke upstairs, and massage & sauna on the top floor.

Pretty girls that rotate throughout the week. Legit massage if that's all you want. Nice rooms with private shower, toilet, etc., and a nice double bed. A great oily massage can be had for one hour for 30K ariary (~$15). Extras are available, but each girls sets her own rates. First time got a BBBJ from a little spinner for 50K ariary (~$25); second time was BBBJ with one of the prettiest Chinese-Malagasy metisse I've ever seen, but cost 2x as much. Yes, very expensive by Tana standards, but also very safe, convenient and even the wife thinks it's just a massage place

Agree. When I was there for 3 weeks, I only got stopped 1 time, riding my motocycle from Ambataloka to Hell Ville without a helmet. A somewhat joking discusssion with the officer - as I was in a hurry to pick up my "girl friend" - let me off the hook. On my way back, half an hour later, the same policemen stopped me again, but just to compliment me for the pretty girl riding on the back. :-) see below...

On the passport: at every travel I carry a colour copy of the pic-page of my passport, reduced to half size and sealed into a plastic-cover.

Yes she could because she come with my friends to pick me at the airport she was with me when I change money at Hell ville before going to Ylang Ylang and the thieves stole me exactly the money I change and 3000 euro but leave the passport and other money she don't know I had in the same luggage where they pick the money.

So, if I understand, the gold rule is: passport always safe in hotel ; the photocopy doesn't work and always carry a 5 euro bill for the cops. right?

Yet, what concerns me is the possibility of losing the passport. I read that in Tana, police checks are frequent and if you have not the passport with you, you can go for big trouble.

During my 5 weeks in Mada (6-7 nights in Tana) I didn't get checked a single time. I did not carry my passport at all but always had a photocopy with me. From what I have heard you will not get 'big trouble' if you're checked and don't carry your passport but it might cost you something like 10K Ariary in bribe.

Mada is in general a safe place, but burglaries can happen everywhere.

This is thrue; thefts occur anywhere in the world, but this doesn't worry me. I soon should I go there (finally after waiting a lot of time). I do not care about theft, malaria or possible clashes ahead of the upcoming elections.

Having that load of cash. And leaving it in a room without putting it into a safe? Don't blame the hotel. Its your fault.

Mada is in general a safe place, but burglaries can happen everywhere. Thats why seasoned travellers take precautions only little cash for the next 3 or 4 days, but use credit cards. ATMs are working even in Madagascar and middle class hotels do accept credit cards. Hide your valuables. Even the simple trick underneath the matress is better then keeping it in any drawer. In case someone breaks in, the damage then is limited.

The staff of the Ylang Ylang put me in a room without cash and the girl a certain NEKE with a tattoo of a snake on her right leg give them information about my money I was still arrived after a trip of more yhan twelve hours I was very tired.

Take care don't go to hotel Ylang Ylang Ambataloaka there are thieves in the same hotel they broke my luggage and steel me 3000 euro without broke the door it happend the same day I arrived.

Yes, nice and cheap place. But perhaps of the rain, when I was there, the mossies did bother me / us - and therfore moved to another hotel with air-con.
